Drinking too much / too quick?

Recommended Posts

So, I see a lot of people posting that they struggle to get their fluids and Protein in. I guess I'm lucky to not be having a problem, but I'm wondering if I'm drinking too much or two quickly. It's 945am now. At 8:30, I started a 12 oz glass of Water and finished about 9:05. Made a 12 oz Protein shake at 9:15 and it'll last me until 10. That's 24 oz in an hour and a half, fully a third of my daily liquid and 2/3 of my daily Protein (shake is 50g of protein).

I'm worried that I'm drinking too much, too quick. I'm now 10 days post-op and have no thrown up at all, feel full often and have to back off, etc. It just seems like I'm able to take more. Is that an issue? Am I stretching my stomach too much? My doc told me on Monday that he's not as concerned about the final number of fluids, as long as I'm drinking all day long.

Thoughts?

I personally think that everyone is different...if you are tolerating it then I don't see a problem. I personally have a problem because I can't just sit and sip all day...I have a 2 y/o who wants what I have and also a job where I am busy and on the move a lot so I can't just keep something in front of me all the time. When I do have those moments, I can drink fairly fast too. :)

Hi Jeff. We had surgery on the same day. I am like you--no problems getting Fluid down. I haven't felt dehydrated at all. This is good because I have a history of kidney stones and would like to avoid them again. But I too am concerned. I feel like the doc might not have taken enough of my stomach out. One thing I am trying to remember is that many people have posted on the boards that we won't feel real restriction until we start solids. I am on 3 weeks of full liquids, so I am praying I will feel full restriction when that ends.

I'm at Stage IV of my doc's plan right now. My meals are 2 oz of mushy Protein 3x a day (today: B - Cottage cheese, L - Baby food, D - Ricotta). I definitely have felt "full" from liquids and foods, but I guess I'm just a little unnerved that I can do more than I expected to be able to at this stage.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
