Hi

I was sleeved on January 10, 2013. I had watched a friend go through a successful gastric bypass. I did my research and felt that the sleeve was a better choice for me. My problem is that I don't know too many sleevers. I am sort of floating out here alone. So, I ended up here at this forum. I am from North Carolina. The whole process has gone smoothly. I started in July and was sleeved last Thursday. I am officially one week out. I feel almost normal. No real pain, except some in my throat from the breathing tube. I am getting my Proteins in as well as my fluids. I guess my concern is how my experience is comparing with others. My other concerns -which may seem small-when I read other posts are my breath and my hair. I know it sounds crazy, but I work with kids. And they are brutally honest. If I go at them and my breath is kicking from ketoacidosis they are going to tell me and my day will likely go downhill. Currently I have great hair. I just decided to go natural with it. I simply don't want to lose it. Well, that is my introduction. I look forward to hearing from someone-ANYONE~ as this is an experience in which I do not want to continue vitually on my own.

Congratulations on your surgery!

I think you have come to the right place. You will not be alone, that's for sure. You can participate as much or as little as you want.

I'm 4 weeks out and had a similar experience to you - no real pain, etc.

I have a worry about the hair loss as well. My hair is so thin already that the thought of losing tons of hair has me more than a little nervous. I've been told not everyone loses hair, and that it's all about the Protein, however, this forum seems to indicate otherwise.

I was worried about the breath as well, but did not experience any problems with this.

I wish you the best!

Welcome doll. I am in NC to. I to have no support in my area and I don't personally know anyone that has had the sleeve, but I have made some great people on this site. It is a great place for support. I know several people that had the gastric bypass, but I didn't want to have my intestines rearranged or have the vomiting/dumping and food restrictions. I basically chose the sleeve because I wanted my stomach to function like normal, just be smaller for the permanent Portion Control, and so far that's exactly what it's been. I am a month out tomorrow and haven't had any problems since my surgery. I'm not hungry, ever, but eat every 3-4 hrs. as my nut told me to. I'm still not able to get in my 64 oz. of Water a day, but my nut wasn't too worried about it as long as I don't show signs of dehydration and to at least try to get 48 oz. The breath thing gets better when you can eat a little bit more foods (carbs), my husband said mine was horrible for the first couple weeks. I kept sugar free peppermint hard candies to suck on at work so I wouldn't offend anyone, but luckily I have my own office and don't converse with alot of people face to face. I have very thick hair myself, but am still a little worried that I'll lose more than I want,...even though it doesn't really start for 3-4 months post-op. If it starts look'n cruddy I'll just get it cut to my shoulders and grow it back out when the Hair loss stops. Might want to try Biotin, I heard that helps with the hair and nails. Congratulations on your surgery and I wish you the best of luck. Keep in touch...

Hi Traci,

Thanks for the insight and the advice. I find myself sipping all day. After several hours I finally finish something. Of course I am still at home and have the luxury of doing that. I was told I could count all my liquids towards my 64 oz.. Dehydration is a huge concern for me as I know this is an easy way to end up back in the hospital. This was my first hospital stay and surgery in 43 years. I have no desire to go back anytime soon. Thank you for reaching out to me. Congratulations on your success!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
