Just starting the process abd i have a question..

Recommended Posts

So my consultation apt is coming up on Monday. I have also already scheduled all of my other necessary apts and testing over the next week and a half to get it done fast.

I guess what my question is, is that I have no medical issues. BP, sugar, heart, lungs.. Everything is fine. However, I'm 5'3 and 278lbs which puts my bmi around 48. So can they approve my surgery based solely on my bmi? Or does there have to be another issue.

Thanks in advance!

Most plans cover high BMI's without comorbities. You have a high BMI, you just need to familiarize yourself with your insurance plan, as to what it's requirements are. Also, it's great that you have all your appointments scheduled. Sometimes paperwork cannot be submitted for approval because we haven't finished all the requirements. Good luck.

Thank you. I did call my insurance company. They said no spacific requirements, they do it on case by case as long as the doctor says its medically necessary. I just didn't know if by "doctor standards" it was necessary if the o ly thing wrong is my actual weight.

IF you can get a letter from your PCP stating that he/she feels its medically necessary its extra brownie points in your corner. The More Dr's you get on your side the better.

I have CIGNA, and they said the same thing to me. As it turns out, even though they state that they have no specific guidelines, they use the standards recommended by the Lung Heart and Blood Institute. The LHBI says greater than 40 without comorbities. They also talk about supervised diet, etc.. You can google them, and there are many BMI tools online to help you determine your BMI. Hope this helps.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
