?'s I have on protein drink I made @ home

Recommended Posts

I have not had my surgery yet it is tentatively scheduled for Feb. 19th, waiting on Ins approval. I have been trying to experiment on making Protein drinks at home. I made one today and would like some opinion's on if the calories, carbs, & sugars are too high. I seriously need to work on scaling down the size because this shake ended up being 40ish ounces.

Here's a list of my ingredients:

2c. Ice

1c. frozen mixed berries (strawberry, blueberry, blackberry, pomegranate, raspberry)

1 scoop EAS vanilla Protein powder

1 scoop unflavored Soy Protein power

1c Almond Breeze vanilla Almond milk

2 1/4oz SF Raspberry Davinci Syrup

1/4oz vanilla extract

3/4tsp. banana flavoring

3/4c Water

Ninja'd and blended all together

This is what I got for Nutrition info for the whole 40oz

Calories: 410

Fat: 6.05

Carbs: 37

Fiber: 6

Sugars: 27

Protein: 50

Of course I am not going to drink this at 1 sitting probably take me several hours I only had a big enough cup for 32oz. so I put the rest in the freezer. It ended up a little powdery tasting so I'm thinking I need a little more flavoring like SF Syrup or flavored extracts.

Any ideas there?

Also do I count any of this toward my Water intake??

So what is everyone's thoughts on this shake, I'm hoping after sitting a couple hours it wont become disgusting.

Thank you in advance for your input and if you have any suggestions for other ways to make drinks I would love to hear them :}

You can't have the fruit in the beginning. Yes it does sound like it is two portions; two scoops of Protein Powder? I am sure if you remove the fruit the carbs wont be so high either, 37 wow too high. My Protein powder has 2 grams per scoop.

I make my shakes with protein powder(any flavour), soy milk(one cup) it has high protein and a flavouring of my choice for that day.

For the first week after surgery I was on Clear liquids. I then went 4 weeks on full liquids. I was hitting 200 calories for the first month or so a day. For the 2nd month i was still at 400 calories between 3-4 months i was 500-600 and it took a while for me to hit 800 calories a day. I was told to keep my carbs down below 20-30 grams a day and each meal should be kept at 8-9 grams of carbs.

I think for right after surgery the berries with the seeds would be something your surgeon may not approve of. I know for sure my surgeon and nutritionist would be completely against. I also think the berries would be hard on your system until you are on solid foods.

I think it's sounds good when you are down the road. Perhaps buying a small magic bullet and making smaller size shakes, adding one or two berries would be a good ideal. When you are on maintenance these shakes would be great too or a for a treat.

Ok so what the heck do I do until I can have fruit, the powders are too powdery tasting and im not much of a chocolate and vanilla person. I feel very lost as to what to do :?

Look the berries are an absolute no-no the tiny seeds would get stuck in your sleeve, ask your doctor for guidance. What do you mean powdery tasting? Add one scoop powder, the liquid of your choice and any flavouring that you like(just watch your quantity). As I am sure you have heard your tastes will change after surgery, you may like the shakes.< /p>

That is also a lot of sugar! I use ice in the blender too... makes for a better shake. Try sugar free pudding mix, (but not to much) for flavorings.

Definitely nix the berries. :(

So, are you wanting more of a fruity flavor? You can always add sugar free blackberry Syrup or any of the other fruit flavors (coffee flavorings) or extracts. Maybe one of those will cancel out the chalky taste you seem to be tasting.

Maybe pre-mixed shakes will be the way you need to go, they don't seem to have as much of that taste.

I like Protein shakes, so I don't seem to notice that taste, unless it is a 'cheap' brand.

Hope you find something you like.

When I was recovering from the lap-band surgery I discovered the Syntrax Nectar line. They are more fruit flavored base. It was a nice change from the vanilla/choc milky stuff. You might give those a try.

Thank you all for your feed back. I live in a town that has no stores like GNC or stores that carry the nectar or Unjury brands. Closest I have come to anything I have heard is a good brand is the EAS I can find @ Sam's Club and they only have Vanilla & chocolate. I'm worried about ordering a bunch of Protein online because I have been told that my taste's will change and there's a good chance I will be lactose intolerant. I guess I maybe should order some of those SF syrups online, only ones I can find local is hazelnut, caramel, raspberry and vanilla. I will hurry up and eat all the frozen berries I have b4 surgery.....LOL

What about banana's can I maybe put some banana in with vanilla powder for flavor? There's no seeds.....lol

Yes you can!! Bananas are okay....but as with everything...moderation. It's in my soft/puréed diet at the moment. I'm 4 days post op.

Vitamin shoppe and GNC both have where you can order online. And return shipping is no problem with either of them. Google Syntrax nectar or try places like mybariatricpantry.com and they even have sample packets to buy and try. :) it's a lifesaver because some of the flavors will taste like crap to you and others you will like. They are in a pack of 10-14 ? And you will spend around 15 dollars. Just different options.

The calories carbs and sugar are all really high.

Could you just get a shaker cup and mix the Protein with skin milk or unsweetened almond milk? That's what I do and it tastes really good.

I actually enjoy drinking my protein everyday.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
