JennyBeth 127 Posted January 19, 2013 I have told only 4 people so far (husband, mom, boss and 1 co-worker) I plan on just telling everyone else at work I'm having my gall bladder removed and once I start losing weight I will tell people the truth. I don't have a problem telling people I just don't want to deal with their judgement beforehand. My co-worker that I told has been nothing but judgmental saying things like "you don't look THAT big to be getting surgery" or "you'll never be able to drink/eat at the same time-that's INSANE and doesn't sound healthy". I'm 5' 4" and 220 lbs and I want to lose 80-90 pounds. I am THAT big and the eating/drinking is a small sacrifice to regain my health/weight loss. I figure it's the same thing as telling everyone what you plan on naming your baby before you deliver-people think it's perfectly fine to say things like "I once knew a person named so-and-so and I hate that name!" but no one would dare say that after you actually named the baby that. It's the same before the surgery-people think it's acceptable to give you their unsolicited advice/thoughts. Once you're losing the weight there might be some who give you a negative response, but it'll be much less than beforehand.
futuresleever 44 Posted January 19, 2013 I am saying the gallbladder thing too. Not sure when I will tell folks the real deal.
SerendipityHappens 1,594 Posted January 19, 2013 I am saying the gallbladder thing too. Not sure when I will tell folks the real deal. Only say the gallbladder thing if you are actually having your gallbladder out along with the surgery.. If you're not having your gallbladder out at time of surgery you don't want to risk it becasue a lot of people get gallbladder problems after WLS and then when you get your gallbladder out for real, you'l have to make up another excuse! "hernia repair" is a good cover. Personally I HATE that there is such a negative stigma about WLS that so many of us feel we have to keep it hidden.
JennyBeth 127 Posted January 19, 2013 I will tell people the truth once I start losing the weight. It's not that I enjoy lying to people, honestly I prefer to be honest right from the start, however there is so much negativity attributed with WLS. Even from those that I have told I still feel they have their "doubts" that this time will be different from all the stuff I've tried over the years and that I'll actually be successful this time. Once I am proving I can be successful with this "tool" then I will feel more comfortable being honest about it. I would never feel right if someone ever asked "did you have WLS?" saying no and denying it. I feel like being honest could help someone else in a similar situation-I just want to get comfortable with my sleeve before I feel everyone's judging me! cas 6 Posted January 20, 2013 Totally understand, I have a friend who got the sleeve in October and she has been great to talk with. I believe we each have to approach this in our own ways and share with others as we see fit.......it's my battle, some understand and some don't.....lol

cas 6 Posted January 20, 2013 You know funny thing last nite, I was thinking about all the comments of what people are going to say as they lose weight and the explanations. Now understand that I am a fairly private person when it comes to my feelings and life. However, I feel I have been on this journey for most of my life and now I am embarking on another journey where I will be healthy, happy and skinny! lol There are things in life that I am sure that people do not approve of, just as there are things in life that I do not approve of, however, it is very difficult for someone who has never had a weight issue to understand WLS and the need for it by some; and that is an opinion that will never change. I do not live my life for others and I do not expect they live theirs for me. If I am not truthful about why and how I am losing weight, I am not being truthful with myself and that is what got me into this, as well as some genes! So, I will be honest about it and if I meet those staggering looks, so be it......I am excited about this journey and the light at the end of the tunnel and will not allow that excitement to be taken from me. Besides, this surgery is no different that anyone needing cardiac, orthopedic or otherwise, if it is broken you fix it.......And that my friends is my wisdom of the day...LOL! 1 Rust E. BeBeSpArKLeS 70 Posted January 20, 2013 Hi all, I just joined and I'm very excited. My PCP referred me to the surgeon on January 4th. I had my first appointment with him on January 15th. My paperwork was submitted to insurance on January 17th and I received the shocking call on January 18th. I was approved!! My surgery is schedule for March 20th!! I have only told my husband, sister, and boss I will tell others when i start losing weight but I don't want others opinions beforehand because its not their decision and I don't want them to try to persuade me not to go through with it! 1 oldnavee reacted to this

Courtney 12 Posted January 20, 2013 Hi everyone! I'm a longtime member of VST but after a couple years of on-and-off lurking, this is my first actual post. I'm excited to share that I'm tentatively scheduled to have surgery with Dr. Perez in Cancun on March 8th. Just need to make sure I can expedite my passport delivery and such! It's something I've waited a long time for, and it's been extremely frustrating because my insurance coverage specifically excludes weight loss surgery or treatment of any type. I finally realized I could just take a loan from my 401K to pay for the surgery in Mexico, and honestly, I am floating on Cloud Nine with the realization that I'm finally going to have the tool I need to change my life forever. I've been struggling with my weight from an extremely early age (let's just say I was always embarrassed of my school photos from second grade onward), and I never thought I'd see the day where reaching my ideal weight actually seemed like a realistic goal. I'm excited to be here with you guys to share our experiences and thoughts as we make this journey, and I'd love to make some sleeve buddies! If anyone else is planning to be in Cancun on March 8th, please send me a message - let's chat!
