So after 2 years of going back and forth with my decision, I finally made the choice last month to have the surgery and took the plunge by paying my deposit and scheduling the date...March 22. Well, during that time, I also decided to look for a new job after 9 years at my current employer. So, fast forward a few weeks, I am now in the final stretch of being offered a position at a great company. Well with this new company, I have found that their insurance covers bariatric surgery. My current place of employment does not, and does not cover any complications related to the surgery (one of the reasons it took me so long to decide to do the surgery).

So here's my struggle that I'm currently dealing with...knowing that I pretty much have this new job deal in the bag, do I cancel the surgery I have schedule in Mexico and wait to do it with the new insurance company? Or do I just do it in Mexico, get it over with, and start on my new life?

It really depends if it's financially better for you. You could wait for your insurance to kick in and cover the surgery, and you have to go through the insurance hoops too. You have to ask yourself: do you need the surgery ASAP or could you hold out another year? Then again, if you have the surgery now, in a year from now, you'd be closer to goal.

Do you know how long you would have to wait for the new insurance to cover your surgery? How long it would take to get approved? Ultimately, the decision is up to you, but having insurance that will cover your surgery and your after care is pretty nice.

Well I have all the money saved up and ready to go...although it would be nice to keep that in my bank account! I did the research on the new insurance and I'd have to pay 10% out of pocket...so I'm estimating (based upon what I was quoted in US prices) I wouldn't have to pay more than $2k to get it done...plus I'd have all the "pre-op & post-op" care covered. I would have to wait 6 months to have the surgery with the new insurance, but I meet all criteria for it so I'm not afraid of denial. I think the more appealing thing is just the coverage in case of any complications...

Do I need the surgery now? Of course - I'm overweight, I'm not healthy and I need to get a handle on it.

My husbands new job covers it as well but we have to be on it 2 years before even starting to qualify... i want this now, not in 2 years!! I feel you! I want to get on with my new life!

I would rather have my surgery at home with my support system right there rather than across the country and across the border. It has nothing to do with Mexico being Mexico. It's about convenience and comfort for me and comforting to my loved ones. If I had your choice I'd save my money and stay home. Then I'd Celebrate in Mx on vaca with a healthier me. But since WLS is excluded I'm down with Mx! Just make the choice that is best for you and your loved ones...

Definitely check if a similar condition applies to your new coverage.

If it was me, I'd check to see how many hoops my new insurance would make me jump though.. If I could get it done with insurance within the year, then I'd do it. If I had to wait for a long time and then possibly still not qualify then I'd be in Mexico..

Also, look at the waiting time as a period to lose weight and focus on changing eating habits. I know that the same is not true for everyone, but for me personally losing weight is a lot easier when you have a light at the end of the tunnel.

Definitely check on what they want you to do hoop wise as others mentioned above. I've read posts by others who had to do 6 months of nutritional visits, etc ahead of time before they could even get a date. But, there are also some pretty big benefits to having your surgery local if there are complications, etc and additional support is needed. Sometimes it's not just about the money.

This is a life time decision. Does waiting a few more months make that big of a difference? If my insurance covered it, I'd wait just so I'd have the full local medical support provided by a local surgeon.

I had a similar question when reading the updates for my existing insurance in 2013. For me it did come down to dollars and cents. While WLS was finally being covered, I had to read the fine print, the hoops. My co-pay is 20% with an out of pocket max per year and a hefty deductible but still slightly less expensive than going to MX. The fine print is where the decision was made for me. All the Nutrition counseling, "medically monitored diet", diet program foods, and a bunch of tests like psych evals would NOT be covered by the plan. So, my actual costs and time kept MX the better choice for me.

It's such a personal decision though, you gotta weigh the pros and cons for yourself. I will admit I still have moments of trepidation, thinking I'm a little crazy to have this out of country when I could be patient and thrifty (to afford it) and have it done "at home".
