I had a little too much excitement on operation day(Jan 7th). I was so worried about a leak but didn't know this could happen. I'm posting this only because you never know what could happen and if this can save anyone the trouble I went through it will be a good thing! After my surgery my blood pressure would not rise. I was a bit foggy on how they knew what was wrong, but they wheeled me back down to the OR for a second surgery. There was a blood clot and it was easily flushed out and all done laproscopically through the same openings in the initial procedure. Once back upstairs again, my blood pressure was still not rising . They gave me several bags of blood, but still nothing. My doctor came in and said they were taking me down for a 3rd surgery. That they might have to remove my spleen and they would have to cut me open. I began to hyperventilate. Not much I could do. Just as they were about to put me under again, my blood pressure began to rise. NO THIRD SURGERY!!!! As it turned out, the coagulant for the blood transfusions had not been added at the same time as the blood because it was not housed in the same place as the blood. Hard to believe, This is a top notch hospital. This is why I chose this doctor. So, I spent a few extra days in the hospital. I had purchased the Bliss insurance so everything was covered. They took great care of me! I'm doing great and healing well. I even walked on the treadmill today for 30 minutes. Tolerating everything and have lost all the 25lbs. I gained from all the fluids they were pumping in me plus 5 more. So, the moral of this story is, if your blood pressure is not rising, make sure they are giving you a coagulant with the blood transfusion.

It can also happen as a reaction to narcotics (pain killers). Mine tanks dangerously low when I take them. Dangerous for someone else, but for me it's not biggie. I have no adverse symptoms of low blood pressure, just scary low numbers that make the docs and nurses freak out :) It's kind of like being the clown in your own circus! Morphine...ya watch this!!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
