nasojejunum tube placement pending

Recommended Posts

the nasogastric tube SUCKS! i've had two during my four hospitalizations (complications from a prolonged leak). the j tube wasn't so bad. i did my feedings at 60 overnight but would have to do it for 12 hours. i couldn't stomach more than 60 for the rate or it made me ill. i did osmolite for a while, then switched to my premier Protein drinks (and added in a tbsp of olive oil as i was beginning to get "ashy"... seriously). i'm sorry you have to go through this, but it's better than being malnutritioned. at my lowest, i got to 130 and am 5'7. that is too small.... i'm about 140 now and holding.

oh and btw, i got a little bag that someone gave me and put my pump in there with the feeding bag made up and could just rock and roll whereever i wanted.

here's a tip that i never knew until i had my feeding tube: keep the small diet cokes or canned cokes in the house and do flush with that once a week, then flush the tube at least 3-4 times a day. make sure you do this or you could have "issues" if you don't....

you'd be surprised what you can acclimate to whenever you just have to.

i had my feeding tube from 12/14 (ish) to hmm, last week. i am so glad it's gone. i'm almost back progressed to chicken in my diet, but fish is my favorite right now.

best of luck!

yeah, that cokeacola is our little secret when our patient's tube is clogged! thank you for your encouragement.....very helpful. I have an apt with my NUT 2-4-13 for my vit a def. (3 - too low for NJ out and J tube in). 2-25-13 is my next surgery date. Malnutrition sucks....the peptide Impact 1.5 is top notch and i already feel better. 15 hours at 70 ml/hour is my goal. not quite there yet plus 900 ml total of flushing. glad you are on the mend!!!!!!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
