Work Rumors..... Ahhhhh

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I'm really struggling with this & would love some input. I decided to take 2.5 weeks off for my surgery, after announcing my 2 week "vacation" rumors started swirling that I was having Gastric Bypass. Funny thing is -- I'm NOT having Gastric Bypass - ha! ha! and I have told no one about the surgery. I don't feel like it is anyone's business & frankly don't want to deal with all the opinions.

Now that I've been off work I've lost 25lbs & the weight I'm sure will start falling off. I still feel like they can talk all they want, but need to mind their own business.

Thoughts?

After you announced your two week "vacation" rumors started that you were having gastric bypass? That's odd... out of all the reasons you could be out, why would everyone assume that? Have you shared any medical stuff with anyone at work? On the other hand, if you said that you DID have surgery, what would happen?

I thought the same thing...is someone in HR telling your business?

Yeah -- I think because of my size 22/24 they assume I would have something "weight related" -- not nice & actually hurtful :(

If I then said I had surgery they would be so judgmental. I'm actually pissed about the initial rumor & feel like they can speculate all they want, but it's none of their business.

I have not shared with anyone at work any medical info.

Why do you care? If you aren't going to correct them and take away their power to annoy/bother you those "rumors" will continue to swirl around the office. You are giving them more power. Educate them, walk away and shut them up.

I didn't tell everyone before I left but I did as soon as I got back to work. For me personally if I was just up front than it wasn't a secret so its not very fun to gossip about.

I've considered not telling my co-workers, they are a bunch of gossips. A co-worker of mine had it done but didn't tell anyone and everyone was guessing when the weight started coming off. Once everyone found out it was the talk of the office because she had lied about it (therefore making the gossip juicier). Lots of whispers "did you know so-and-so had that weight loss surgery? Yeah she said she didn't at first, blah blah blah" -- So I decided I will tell anyone who asks me. I won't go around advertising but to me, it's best to just answer honestly and it takes the fun out of their speculation and gossip. They will talk anyway if that's how they are. At the very least, it takes the fun out of the guessing game for them.

**this is probably not everyone else's experience...I think I work with some of the worst when it comes to gossip!** LOL

I have been private about my surgery - meaning it is not in the company newsletter, but it is not a big secret either... A few people have asked me about what I am eating because they SEE what I bring for lunch - and I truthfully tell them that I am following an Adkins-like diet - high Protein and low carbs... but no one has asked if I had surgery... If someone asked me point-blank, I would say yes, I had gastric sleeve surgery...

I have only told few people in my life about my surgery, I've thought about coming out and telling everyone, but to me it's really no ones business. People ask about my diet and I tell them, just like the previous poster, that I'm doing high Protein, low carb with smaller portions (which is true). Mostly anyone I'm remotely close to knows what I'm doing so it's not a secret to close friends and family, but anyone outside of that doesn't get to know my personal business unless its someone also struggling and trying to figure out what I did, etc. I'm all about helping people. I too find it a little odd that they jumped to weight loss surgery, I took a week off and no one said a word, even when I started losing the weight..

I didn't tell anyone at work either. It's none of their business. And if/when I do get the sleeve, I might just tell them hard and dedication. I once assumed someone at work got the band. But I never inquired. I just congratulated her whenever I saw her. So keep ur personal health business to yourself and let them marvel at the new, healthier you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
