Lifting weight restriction after surgery? Toddler, baby, pets?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I'm due to have surgery on January 30th and also have a delightful and very demanding 1.5 year old who wants "up PEASE" all the time. Did anyone have surgery with a toddler or baby (or even pet that likes to be toted around)? Did you have any weight restrictions on lifting said child? If so for how long and most importantly how did you cope??

Thanks in advance for your sharing your stories.

Roxannez

i had surgery on dec 8 and that was my biggest fear !!!! i have temp custody of my 18 mo old granddaughter and she weighs 23 lbs !

i was told i think 10-15 lbs was my limit , but i didnt have a choice! i was so greatful my fiance took his vacation time the week after surgery to help. he did alot of the lifting stuff.....getting her out of the crib, putting her in the tub....etc...so i really tried not to physically hold her . poor thing ...she didnt understand why her mimi wasnt holding her anymore and after about 4 days she really would not come to me anymore !!at night , i would sit in the recliner and pull her onto my lap and hold her that way ....i would show her my " boo boo's and owies " so she would understand. as far as the second week .i was on my own !!!! and believe me ,it wasnt bad at all !!!i had 5 incisions with the biggest ...an inch...on my rt upper side ....so i would carry her on my left hip to tryto keep pressure off my side. EVERY SINGLE DAY gets easier .........trust me ...as far as the pain goes .......i was seriously able to be back at work after 2 weeks but am takin advantage of my sick time and go back next moday......6 weeks !!! lol!!!

of all things ......that was my biggest worry ......the weight restriction thing........then i constantly worried if i would do any damage .....but i came out just fine . i know some ppl have a drain .....i did not , so it was easier on me.

good luck and ask away if u have any more questions !! getting the sleeve was the best thingever ! :)

i also thought of putting a pack n play beside my bed and kinda keepin her contained in that while being in my bed ....but i didnt need it !i do remember lyin on my side and kida bending over and scooping her up using my left side as most of my pain was on my rt ! Also ...i tied a belt to my headboard.......it helped in getting to a sitting position!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
