9 months out and going strong!

Recommended Posts

I just had my 9 month post op check up......I went in at 204lbs with diabetes, sleep apnea, high lipids, you name it. At 9 months I am 163lb and in a size 8 Levi...from a 20 to an 8! I NEVER in my life thought that it would be possible! I have 30 lbs left till my 'cinderella' goal weight of 130. I am 5 foot 5 inches and not a very big frame. At this point, the sleeve not only saved my life but has been absolutely the BEST thing I ever did for myself-for health and for peace. Sleep apnea-gone, high lipid-gone. Blood sugars WAY down! For those of you thinking about this....,how badly do you want to be healthy for once and for all? It IS work, but you are worth the work and the effort. Exercise is fun (gasp with horror) because you can MOVE without killing yourself from the Flubber effect! Imagine that! Movement without jello! You CAN do this, it IS worth the effort and everything else that goes with it. Be brave and love yourself!!

Thank you thank you thank you! I needed to hear this! My surgery is scheduled on Feb 5 th and I'm terrified and excited!! I'm 260 lbs and 5'4". I am very active but I pay for it with all the aches and pains I deal with on a daily basis. Can't wait to move without being sore. I just need to know I'm doing the right thing and I won't regret it 10 years down the road.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
