Local Y, or Curves?

Recommended Posts

Well I've convinced my husband that I need to join a gym or whatnot. I'm leaning toward Curves, all women, get in get out. Not sure exactly what they offer or cost. My 2nd choice is our Y. Any thoughts on either of theses! Would appreciate it much!

I did love curves when I was younger but I need daycare to be able to go more than 2 times a week! :)

From my understanding curves can be limiting time wise and is more geared towards beginners. They are both good options and you should maybe take a tour of them both and choose whatever option works best for you.

I personally would choose y so you can do more specialized exercises for your problem areas and will allow you amp up your routine as needed. I do a general good workout for my whole body and do targeted exercises for my abs and inner thighs. I don't believe that curves can do this for you.

I did curves for a few months and never lost any weight! Lol, I feel like I'm getting a much better workout at the gym! Just my opinion

I'd check them both out. The good one is the one you will do. One might be closer, more convenient, just more appealing - whatever.

I am considering joining the Y because the two closer gyms don't offer morning classes. I won't go to exercise class at night. I've been walking 4 days a week but I miss my strength training. I also won't go use the machines. Classes or group activities are what I need to show up.

I work out at the Y when I'm home. It's low key compared to chain gyms and they offer free classes if you're a member.

You have to weigh the pros and cons like location and hours. Which has better ours and specific equipment you might want to use.

I'd lean towards the Y. You will have access to a variety of machines, possible a pool (depending on your location) and different classes. I think it will offer you much more than a Curves location.

I join the y after I was cleared to exercise. I like the y over the chain gyms or curves. I am able to use the equipment for as long as I want. The hours are great the classes are free. I have a wet/dry sauna, pool and all the machines to work every part of the body. Also the staff is wonderful and they are more than happy to give you tips on how to target a particular area of the body. Still take a tour of both facilities and then make your choice.

If you are someone that does not have a large history of working out pre op then I would suggest CURVES. It is a great option for someone who is just starting out (the machines are not intimidating, the music is fun, the instructors are nice and u dont have to worry about random men staring at u). I was a member at Curves for a year (it closed down) and I loved it. Plus they offer really good Zumba classes and nutritional support. The Y may be too intimidating if ur just starting to work out. Good luck!:)

I pay 34.00 a month at my Curves. If I want to work hard I can get a good work out, if I want to be lazy I get a so so work out. It all depends on me. And I love No Men Allowed!

I love the Y here. I pay extra for the gold room. $50/month...totally worth it for my own locker, hot tub, private shower & sauna!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
