is brown rice better for you?

Recommended Posts

I love me some brown rice with chicken for my post workout meal! I'm not sure on the glycemic index......it's probably middle of the road to low and better than white rice.

I think it is better in terms of what rices are better than others, but I was told by my NUT that there are no rice or pastas that are really that great for you in terms of carbs, there are better things to spend your intake on. I have rice here or there but I really don't bother with it. I try to just keep focused on all the things I know are good and just use things that are just in the middle okay on a sparing basis.

Try Quinoa. That would definitely be a good carb. It's high in Protein and Fiber. It acts a lot like cous cous and tastes a bit like brown rice to me mildly nutty.

Brown rice is complex. The difference is simple carbs are fast digesting (high GI) foods, not too good for building muscle. Complex carbs are slow digesting (low GI) and the preferred type. That being said, WLS patients should limit rice because it fills your sleeve but if you are all set on Protein it should be OK.

NurseGrace hit it on the money on what I was trying to say. While better than white rice, it is not something you have to avoid necessarily but there are lots more better alternatives. Complex carbs are controversial in whether they are ok or not. In my dieting postop (or should I say healthier food choices as I don't really "Diet") I just try to eat things in moderation if it's not entirely dubbed a health food (like lean meats, veggies, etc). Here is a website I found for you all to get a better feel for what I mean.

I'm 3 and half months out and afraid to try rice, won't it swell? Just curious.

I can't say for sure if it swells or not but I can share my experience. I am three months out. I had rice about a week ago, I measured 1/4 cup and only finished half of it and I was fine, didn't notice anything different about my sleeve. That is the only time I have had rice, though, as once I get my Protein and veggies I just don't have room for it.

Good point "Catracks"! I put quinoa in a lot of stuff....turkey meatloaf, lean ground beef with a low cal sauce, chili, etc. Good slow digesting carb with the Protein too! Can't find many foods like that.....it's even better than oatmeal.

Ok stupid question, does the quinoa not act too much as a filler ? I love quinoa

Quinoa is very high in Protein so it is my go to carb. One cup has 8 grams of Protein. It has a high carb count so I eat 1/4 to 1/2 a cup at any one time. It's great mixed with feta or onions or vegetables or meat or anything really.

Filler? Not as much as bread or brown rice because of the protein count. It's almost as good as yogurt, but for the high carbs, but 1/2 cup is 20 grams. I try to stay below 47 so it's okay by me.

If cooked though well I would not think its capable of much more swelling but I do not know that to be a fact. Maybe try half a bite (pinky fingernail size and see if it goes down)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
