Drinking and eating

Can someone explain the reason why you aren't supposed to drink and eat at the same time?

The liquid will cause the food in your sleeve to "wash out" quicker and you may not feel full and therefore not stop eating when you should.

Basically, as I understand it, liquids go through the stomach much faster than solids. So when you drink with a meal or soon after, the liquids encourage the solids to leave your stomach faster too, which means you get hungry again soon. I'm 10 wks post-op and I can definitely say that if I drink too soon after a meal I get hungry pretty quickly.

For me I get sick if I drink too soon after I eat (so that scares me from even thinking of drinking while eating), but I have heard the same thing as others mentioned that it will flush out the food and cause you to be hungry sooner.

I can eat Cereal with half a cup of milk with no problems though.. odd huh? lol

What I don't understand is, what is the difference between eating cereal with milk or chunky Soup and drinking while eating? I cannot eat without drinking something. I only take little sips but I just cannot do it!

According to my dietician, there is no difference, which is why I'm supposed to avoid Soups. What I generally do is strain out the liquid and eat the solids.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
