So, I was just mentioning to my Mom how hard the pre-op diet is going to be, just drinking Protein Shakes and having a salad. She looks at me and says, "Well,if you can do that then why can't you go on a diet?" Really?! I don't know how many times I have to keep repeating myself. It actually gets me irate now because I'm tired of trying to get them to see my point of view. She's overweight too! Why can't she just be skinny?? Probably for the same reason why I can't be. Also, the guy that I've been dating keeps trying to tell me that I'm just wasting my money, that I'm a hard headed person and I can do this on my own blah blah blah. And guess what? He's overweight too! If it's soooo easy then why are they still overweight? I hate that they look at me like I'm just running off trying to get a "quick fix" when I'm not doing that at all. I KNOW that if I don't get this surgery, I will NOT lose weight. Even if I go on a diet, I know myself and I will give up because food has that much power over me. I'm such a strong person, but this is too much for me to overcome without some kind of help. I wouldn't run off to another country, risk the complications, spend all the money on it just for a quick fix. I'm going because I have faith that this is the answer that I've been looking for! I know it's not going to be easy, but having it as a tool that I can utilize will help me so much. I just wish others in my life, my "support system" could actually see that too.

I'm so sorry you are dealing with this. I put off telling my family till just before the surgery (a week) because I was worried about that kind of reaction. I was very pleasantly surprised that they were extremely supportive, but it would have added to my stress to have to deal with that on top of the rest. I'm just very sad that you have to deal with this as well.

I totally get it. I'm in the same boat, my mom tells me that i'm going to be sorry that I got this surgery. I don't know how major surgery to remove 85% of someone's stomach and being on a liquid/soft food diet for 2-3 months is taking the easy way out. I did the 6 month diet, and guess what...I'm gaining again because this is how it always is whenever I diet, I lose some weight, I stall, I wobble, and then I start creeping up again. In the 4 month wait for a surgery date after the diet I've gained 10-12lbs of the 35 I lost.

This is why we need the surgery. I dont think you're prepared to give up and this surgery is not giving up. It's making the choice to get better. None of us are choosing this surgery because it's easy or going to solve every problem we have. It is something that may turn the tables from having no control to being in control of the food. I'm counting on that chance to help me get better and get past my own food/weight issues.

We are going to be fine and when our families see how much better we are, I'm totally going to rub it in.....yeah...i really am and it's going to be fabulous!

My mom is supportive of me getting surgery (I'm waiting for ins approval right now), but she is already going into preach mode, and it's driving me crazy. She keeps randomly telling me obvious things like that I'll need to exercise a lot and perhaps walk 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes after work, and that I'll need to "pay more attention" to nutrition labels and not eat out so often, etc. Yes, mother.

Thanks everyone! I don't know what I would do without this forum. I don't have one single person in my life that is supportive. I feel alone often. But this definitely helps in so many ways!!

Sounds like they need to be educated a little more on the surgery and how just "not so easy" it truly is. Maybe you should have them visit the site and read all the posts. When my aunt had gastric bypass 2 years ago I had the same thought, "she's taking the easy way out. If I can't lose it on my own, I must not want it bad enough".....but I do want it, and failed for over 10 years now to lose. After seeing all the problems my aunt had, who honestly didn't follow any of the rules given and being 2 years out and still throwing up with most foods..I really didn't want to have the surgery. But then I was diagnosed with diabetes and decided to research, as I really didn't want the gastric bypass. I am almost 4 weeks now with my sleeve and am so glad I did it. I left the hospital off my diabetes medication, and the weight and inches are coming off steadily. I have had absolutely no problems at all, other than still trying get all my liquids in. I feel very lucky though, as some haven't been so lucky. But everyone is different and as long as you're prepared and ready for this journey, you will do great. And soon enough, when they see how great you're doing....I bet they may just rethink it themselves to. I think they're just scared is all. Anyway, good luck and I wish you the best.

Do you recommend any good Protein shakes? I tried the Atkins one today, it was alright but tastes weird. In my head all I could think was "this is really gonna suck for a while." Lol

And yes, they need to be more educated, but they won't even look into it. Which blows my mind. My Mom haven't even asked what hospital I'm going to, what doctor. Nothing. So, I will just try to be as strong as I can and do this on my own. Because they won't make any effort to be supportive

You have me! But seriously, you are going to have people that just don't get it and people that do. I was at GNC looking for Protein shakes, Vitamins, and other things since I will no longer be getting the nutrients that I need through food. And I finally told the guy who was helping me because I kept dancing around why I needed certain types... And to my surprise he was really supportive and helpful and patient with all my questions... Oh did I mention that he had a very sexy body hehe

With that being said, we will experience both sides of the rainbow... The good and bad. People that tell you that you can do it on your own who have never been overweight and people who are overweight... Which confuses me??? Oo

Also the site BariatricAdvantage.com has a large variety although I haven't tried it yet.

This forum is a saving grace. The support here is great. My fam is reluctantly supportive, more like resigned...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
