Sleevers are only at risk in the first few weeks. Once the incision has healed in the sleeve there is no risk of a leak. Basically, it's like any other incision make to your body, once the cut heals back together there's no risk of it opening back up.

Leaks tend to be the scariest thing you hear about with this surgery. But if you look at the actual amount of people who have the surgery compared to the amount who get leaks it really is a small ratio. As was already stated above after the first month you don't seem to hear of anyone getting a leak, and my surgeon told me after the first month we don't need to worry about leaks anymore. Good Luck

I have seen a few people that have had leaks 2-3 months out, I was told I would still be a leak risk up to 6 months out, so I guess like anything, it depends on which Dr. is giving you what info, I think it sounds more reasonable to think 1 month and you should pretty much be in the clear though. I was told after about 18 months your stomach will have grown over the staples.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
