loosing slow... 40 lbs in 5 mos

Please fill out your profile info. It really helps me get perspective as to what 40lbs means to you.

For example, if you are 5'6" and was 220lb at surgery. I'd say that you are doing fine, & based on percentages you are right where you should be @ 5months

Conversely if you are 5'3" with a SW of 325, then some red flags would pop up. I'd start questioning some eating habits or even wonder if there might be a thyroid issue.

But without this information I really don't know what to say.

The point about your height and weight in at surgery date is key. I'm 6 feet tall and weighed 342 on Dec 13, date of surgery. This morning I was 294.8 pounds. That is 47 pounds in 30 days. But I have followed the diet closely and walk every day. Even have started light running and lifting in the last two weeks. I have a teenage son who is a QB and I catch passes for him almost nightly so I likely get more activity than most folks 1 month out...

The great news for you is you are headed in the right direction! Losing 40 over 5 months beats the tar out of gaining 1 more over any period of time. Keep at it!

I also have only lost 41 lbs since surgery on 08/28/2012 starting weight 257 height 5'10" ?????

Otr what percentages are you referring to? Just curious as I am a low bmier too, not unhappy with my loss so far but just wondering what you were referring to?

Weightloss is best calculated as a percentage of excess weight lost.

For example we'll use 3726's numbers.

With a height of 5'10" the high end of "normal" BMI is 174lbs. This is a BMI of 24.9.

Now with a start weight of 257.

To get to 174 he/she would have to lose 83lbs

Knowing that he/she had 83lbs to reach a normal BMI & has lost 41lbs we can calculate that 3726 has lost very close to 50% of their excess body fat.

To have lost 1/2 of the weight needed in 4.5 months is quite good.

What happens all to often is that people get on these forums and read about people losing 100lbs in 4-5months but don't take into consideration that said individual was 250lbs overweight when they started & has really made less progress (about 40% as compared to 50%) than 3276 has in this case.

Numbers can be very misleading if they are not put into the right context.

3276, you are 1/2 way to a normal BMI. I'd say that's something to be pretty happy about, you may chose to go lower than 174, but in my opinion, once you reach a normal BMI, any additional loss just icing on the cake

(ok, maybe it's not the best metaphor, bits better than calling it gravy)

do if you average that over a year thats about 100 pounds. Doesnt sound slow to me HOWEVER, are you counting calories and carbs? Have you started straying away from the basics?

Ok, using your numbers.

5'8" a normal BMI starts at 164lbs

Starting at 275 you had 111lbs of excess body fat.

By losing 40lbs, you have lost 36% of your excess body weight. For 4 months, I'd say 36% is very acceptable. Remember, this is most often an 18month plan. You've gotten off to a good start.

Just keep working the plan. You are doing fine.

At 5'7" a BMI of 24.9 (high end of normal) is achieved at 159lbs.

With a SW of 199 you carry 40lbs excess body weight. Having list 24 lbs you have lost 60% of your excess body weight.

Additionally normal BMI ranges from 18.0- 24.9

So at 5'7" a normal range is from 116-159.

Keep in mind that the BMI is a pretty rough tool. And I personally believe that the low end is a bit too low, but that is what the "standard" is.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
