Newly banded...headache!

Recommended Posts

I was banded on Nov 1 (Wed.) by Dr. Spivak in Houston. I was a little panicy on the ride home...you know, what have I done, What will I eat, etc. I was ok after I rested and the anestesia (sp) wore off. Yesterday was really good, but then I started getting a headache in the afternoon. This morning I woke up with extreme nausea and dry heaves. I couldn't get anything down all day today and finally resorted to taking a chance and getting two capsules down of my tension headache medicine. I think one of the reasons for my nausea was the liquid Tylenol and liquid Lortab. Has anyone else experienced this? Any tips for pain meds that are not so hard on the tummy?

Thanks!

I suffer from daily chronic stress headaches and have tried every remedy under the sun...tylenol, acupuncture, acupressure, massage, anti-seisure meds, anti-depressants, imitrex, chiropractic, I have even had my chakra adjusted--to no avail! I have had MRIs, MRAs, Trigger point injections, physical therapy. NOPE! The Diamond Headche clinic in Chicago is a JOKE! They told me a 15 day stay for psychotherapy and MAOIs would cure me...uh, no thanks. My latest stint...(with no relief) was topical ibuprofen. It doesn't work. The only thing that comes close to helping is vicodin or codiene...but that only masks the pain, and good luck finding a doctor to prescribe it with out thinking you're a junkie.

Hi, it is not unusual to have an adverse reaction to the combination of meds and anesthesia. If you are having a basic everyday kind of headache, rather than the type Mariquita is referring to, you can use Tylenol, and it will settle on your stomach, without being dangerous. They have the Go Tab chewables now, or you can soak the capsules in a bit of Water until they become soft, then swallow them. Sometimes the headache and nausea is like a hangover from all the crap the give you.

Another possible cause is suddenly giving up caffeine. I had those...they do go away!

When I get sick at my stomach I always drank 7-up. I still do, I just let it go almost flat, and have had no problems and the blessing of my Dr. doing it. If you still feel bad, you may have picked up a virus, and might ought to call your Dr.

Hope you feel better soon. And Mariquita, I hope you find relief as well!

Kat

Yes, I was probably a little dehydrated as I was so nauseated that nothing was staying down. Thanks for the tips on the chewable tylenol. I think the liquid is just too hard on my stomach.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
