Hello, all...

After doing a whole lot of research --- and reading a TON of posts on these message boards -- I bit the bullet and decided I want to have lap band surgery.

I emailed Dr. Trace Curry this morning and, to my amazement, he returned my email and told me to contact his office.

I have my initial consultation on Wednesday, 11-08-06.

Am I stupid to be aprehensive and scared? I really want to be thin and healthy for the first time in my life. I think Dr. Curry can help me.

Comments and suggestions are welcome!

If so, so am I. I want to eat better, live longer and look better. I am just starting this long process. I may have to self-pay. But nothing is going to stop me this time. My mind is made up,and I am just tired of being fat, not being able to go up and down stairs easy etc. Best wishes on your new jounery.

Nope, I don't think either of you are crazy!!! Lap banding was the best thing I ever did just for me. The one and only regret I have is not having it done long ago.

I feel better, have not a single prescription medication anymore (used to take 4). My body feels better, less achy, I can move, I feel sooooo much better! My newest blood work come back and my Dr. was smiling ear to ear, he was so pleased with my blood sugars, triglycerides, cholesterol...all of it!

If ever my Mother, or my Daughter had a need for this surgery I would support them 100%.

Good Luck!

Kat

This is the best thing I've ever done for myself. I'm a little of a slower loser, but I don't exercise alot because of severe arthritis pain. I'm hoping that as I lose weight, the pain will lessen. Welcome aboard and good luck to you on your journey to bandland.

I will be setting up my surgery with Dr. Curry soon too. So let me know how everything goes. You are going to love him! I was very impressed after my consultation.

Thanks for the welcome to these boards, and for all of your comments, folks!

Now I'll meander around to the Ohio section of these boards and see what's up there. I'll probably start a thread there detailing my experience through lap band land.

***EDIT: Instead, I began a journal which can be read here.

My first consultation with Dr. Curry is Wednesday. I just told my boss that I'll be late to work that day. He wanted to know why I was seeing a surgeon. I told him it was for possible gallstone surgery. I don't want anyone but my husband knowing that I'm doing this procedure. My boss told me "good luck" and just went about his business.

I also found out this morning that I am NOT 5' 8", as I thought. I am 5' 6", so that changes my BMI to 40.9.

Yeesh.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
