excessive weight %

Recommended Posts

I have a question for all of you that have had this surgery. How much of your excessive weight have you lost? My surgeon said that I should lose about 60-70% of my excessive weight. I would like to lose all of it but I know that may be impossible. Or is it impossible?

I think it depends on the person. If you are motivated and determined to get the weight off and keep it off then you will but if you sit there and think you can't do it then you probably won't. It takes discipline and drive to change your lifestyle. Nothing is impossible when you set your mind to it. Good luck!

I've seen so many people on this forum who have reached their goal weight that I know it is possible to lose it all if you put in the hard work of making a complete lifestyle change of proper diet and exercise. I think the doctors tell us figures like 60-70% maybe partly based on averages (since a lot of people don't put in the effort to fully succeed) and maybe partly so that we don't hold them accountable if we don't lose 100% of the excess weight--just a guess.

Thanks for all your replies! I know that I am 150% sure this is what I want and ready for the complete life change! I want my family to change as well so we all live healthier!

If I ever get approved, I will be shooting for my goal weight!

I got those same figures 60% to 70%. Which would put me at 170lbs. My goals get to 140lbs or less! Also taking advantage of the "honeymoon" period loosing the most I can in the first 6 months. Following my program and continuing with it.

It is possible to achieve what look impossible!

The percentage of weight you'll lose is entirely up to two things: your mindset/effort and your body.

I think doctors use averages and want you to have a reasonable expectation to start.

There is no reason, other than your body simply refusing to hit your particular scale goal, that you cannot lose as much weight as you want to lose. Your sleeve at roughly one year out is about as big as it will get. It will be more than restrictive enough to help you maintain or to help you lose a few pounds if you put them back on. And many people continue to lose past one year in order to reach their goal. I lost fairly steadily for 17 months to reach goal and it was no more difficult for the last six months than the first six...it just went more slowly the closer I got to goal. There is no honeymoon with this surgery and no reason you can't lose every pound you want to lose, provided your expectations aren't out of sync with what your body can actually accomplish.

I had 107 pounds to goal, originally lost 108 but my body wanted to maintain at about 105 pounds loss. It was easier to stay there than to fight it for the rest of my life.

I lost 124 percent of my excess weight in less than 3 months. I am now nearly 5 months out and have lost 150 percent. Only 6lb away from being "underweight".

Ive lost 50% in 4 months with very little effort... I just started MAJORLY exercising in recent weeks so I expect to lost the last 50% just fine.... my Dr said he considered my surgery a success if I got to 50% EWL...so I guess his numbers are happy....my EWL was 120 lbs according to them...I said from the beginning, if I "only" had 50-60 lbs to lose, no freakin way would I even had surgery

With 4 more pounds I will be at 90% excess weight lost.

I think it depends on the definition you are using for "excess weight."

If you are using a BMI chart, then that would be anything above the healthy or ideal weight for your height on the chart.

If you are using a number that was provided to you by your NUT or your surgeon, then it would be based on that number.

If you are using your own number, then it maybe different from a BMI chart or what your surgeon or NUT says.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
