Corn/carrots/straws

Recommended Posts

I have read that you are not supposed to eat corn or carrots or drink from a straw with the band! Is this true????? Corn is about the only vegetable that I like!!!

I have heard no straws, you swallow to much air when drinking through one and it can leave you VERY uncomfortable

No corn because of digestion, or lack of....

Carrots I haven't heard!

I also have been wanting salads, but I haven't heard about those and since it is not on my list I haven't been eating them!

Hope this helps!

Hi Kyleigh,

As you'll hear, everyone's "rules" are different. I wasn't given any instructions about foods to avoid--carrots and corn are things I eat regularly. It doesn't take much corn to be enough, and that's a good thing.

The straw advice is also variable. I think it isn't necessarily true that one takes in more air with a straw, especially if one takes care to avoid it. But again, if you are taking in air you'd know it pretty quickly by a feeling of discomfort and need to belch.

You'll discover what works for you and what doesn't along the way. Nothing is hard and fast and everyone's experience is different.

The only reason to avoid corn other than the fact it is hard to digest is corn is chocked full of carbs. Less is more with corn. I love it too but you have to eat it in moderation but look at what population I am talking to. We eat less than moderation. LOL!!!!

I was not given any specific instructions on what to avoid or to eat for that matter. I sorta found out myself through trial and error. I drink with a straw and have found it to NOT be a problem.

I agree with Alex we are all individuals and what works or doesn't work for someone might do just the opposite for someone else.

I don't consider corn a veggie. I toss it in the potato category because it's starchy. However, corn rocks my world. Corn corn, glorious corn. If they told me that I'd definately have to give up corn-on-the-cob or popcorn, I probably wouldn't have gotten the band.

I break ears in half then boil in salt Water. Then Chris tosses them on the grill for a few minutes at the end. I keep them in a Ziplock in the fridge and eat 1/2 ear cold as a snack, which is just as good to me as chips. If you chew chew chew, it's like an intestinal broom. My body votes YES on corn.

I prefer to drink from a straw for the simple reason that I dribble less down my chin than drinking from the glass. Doesn't affect my burpies.

And carrots are another favorite. Shredded, sliced, diced, boiled, grilled. Bring them on! My body votes YES on carrots.

Janie, I used to eat an x-large buttered popcorn plus candy and soda at the movies. Hubby thinks I'm weird because I crave movie popcorn so bad that I'll go to the movies without even knowing what's playing, just to eat popcorn.

However, due to my busy summer so far, I haven't been to the movies since I got my band. So I haven't tested the "how much popcorn" thing yet. The only popcorn I've had so far is one small handful of some caramel corn, which went down really easy.

I'm praying that when I finally make it to the movies, the words "small unbuttered" come out of my mouth. It's weird how the mouth is programmed to order things the mind doesn't need or want, isn't it? Wish me luck!

I'd be careful with the popcorn. I love it, too, but unfortunately I found I could eat as much as I wanted even with the band - and I wanted a lot. So I've found it's best not to tempt myself.

popcorn goes down okay for me too. I think when you are more restricted, that could be a problem, however. Popcorn is one of those things you DO NOT want to get hung up on.

Lisa, I'm so glad your body has voted..lol, very funny.

I have gone to the movies several times banded. You're right, your brain and your mouth are not working together at all. With me, 'movies' means popcorn and milk duds.. no exceptions. But, once again, when you are very restricted things change.

I allow myself these little indiscretions if I've been doing well otherwise. I share my popcorn now and I've found out I can actually watch the movie without Milkduds, too. This is about something I can live with, not deprivation forever and ever Amen.

popcorn and I get along REALLY well. :) I still order the extra-jumbo size, but what's different is that now my husband actually gets to eat some. And more often than not there's quite a bit left at the bottom when we're done.

I was really worried, because from what I'd heard getting hung up on popcorn is not a good thing. But I've had it lots of times with no problems. Everyone is different.

corn...I LOVE IT!!! but i have only had it 2-3 times since banding because of the carbs:rolleyes:

it goes down fine...so does carrots...bread...pasta...meat...

as long as i chew chew chew i have yet to find a food that gives me problems.

now if i get another fill...i doubt i would be able to say that

I thought it was only me. Since I gave up on cakes, pies, candies, I find my self loving popcorn for my sweet tooth (??? it's not sweet???):guess I wasn't sure if popcorn was a big no no, but I haven't had any problems with popcorn. I do avoid corn, but I do eat stemed carrots.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
