Walter Reed National Military Medical Center

Recommended Posts

Hi Heather,

My surgery is scheduled for Monday Jan 13 with Dr. Rehrig. I have heard a lot of good things about Dr. Worlton too. I'm sure that no matter who you choose you will have great care!

For you ladies currently going through the process how tough is it? I see tricare requirements changed and wondered how that impacted treatment at a mtf. Did you have to have 6 months of failed dieting documented before you got your surgery authorization? What kind of hoops have you had to jump through? I see my pcm on Tues to try and get my referral to go to walter reed and just trying to find as much current info as I can. I'm excited.

Hi Marcey,

All had to do is tell my PCM about how I've repeatedly tried and failed at weight watchers and the adkins diet and she put in a referral for me. The hoop jumping came after going to orientation last Sept. I finished the pre-op checklist last Nov, got in for a consult with a surgeon in Dec and am scheduled for RNY Feb 20th. There is a whole bunch of info on Walter Reed's Bariatric web page as well. I think that most of the material they pass out in the orientation class is on the page.

Thanks Patti. Good luck on your RNY. Let me know how it goes. Give me the scoop on how the docs and nurses treat you. If Tricare is paying for it I'm kind of up in the air whether to go to walter reed or johns hopkins.

Will do. Will tricare even give you that choice to go to Hopkins with WR being near by?

That I'm not sure of. I think I qualify to go wherever they accept tricare by distance. Walter reed is 75miles away. I think over 60 you have a choice but don't quote me on that. They are both about the same distance from me. I think I'd prefer Walter Reed because if I'm not mistaken I will have less out of pocket expenses and less problems with a military treatment facility.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
