What happened to your sleep apnea post surgery?

Recommended Posts

I've been on/using the cpac machine since 2004. Even if I get down to my goal weight ill still be on it, but I do know it will need to be turned down, honestly though I will probably do it myself. I have been for awhile, I got tired of the overnight sleep tests.

I think after using my cpap for years now I won't know how to sleep without it. I may be too scared to sleep without. I'm convinced it saves my life every night. Plus I have an inset jaw and very narrow airways that contribute to the apnea, not just the obesity.

I got a BIPAP just before surgery. My apnea was severe. I never did use the thing. My sleep apnea disappeared after about a month. I don't even snore' date=' let alone gasp for air. Thank goodness! I never could get used to pressurized air blowing straight into my face.

I think you have to go in for another sleep study, but I think my pulmonologist (sp?) just wrote me off as cured because I told her flat out that I wasn't coming in for the sleep study. I sent the machine back the next day.

Bad patient, I know, but that was the most miserable experience EVER. I would rather go through surgery again.[/quote']

Yeah I hated my sleep study too

I got my CPAP a year ago as part of surgery prep. It totally saved my marriage as Hubbs was tired of my sawing logs so we were sleeping apart. I am 6 weeks post surgery and 30 lbs lost. I had to see the sleep doc because the pressure on my CPAP started blowing my mouth open. I was waking up with cotton mouth and the racket was, you guessed it, waking up Hubbs. Doc turned down the pressure on the CPAP and says if I keep losing and getting healthy, I will probably be CPAP free at goal. This is very motivating!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
