What happened to your sleep apnea post surgery?

Recommended Posts

I've been using a CPAP for about 15 years, and I was wondering how people have dealt with sleep apnea and CPAP's as weight loss occurs. Did you just decrease the pressure? Go for a new sleep study? Did the apnea go away?

I have never breathed particularly well, so I may always have issues, even after I lose weight.

I got a BIPAP just before surgery. My apnea was severe. I never did use the thing. My sleep apnea disappeared after about a month. I don't even snore, let alone gasp for air. Thank goodness! I never could get used to pressurized air blowing straight into my face.

I think you have to go in for another sleep study, but I think my pulmonologist (sp?) just wrote me off as cured because I told her flat out that I wasn't coming in for the sleep study. I sent the machine back the next day.

Bad patient, I know, but that was the most miserable experience EVER. I would rather go through surgery again.

I had moderate sleep apnea, diagnosed about three months before surgery...I absolutely hated the CPAP! I wore it because I had to for insurance reasons, but that was it! I wore it at the hospital because they made me bring it (plus, the anesthetist drugged me so well that I wasn't efficiently breathing on my own right after surgery so the CPAP helped me a little there! I brought it home and haven't used it since. My husband says that I still snore, but that I am not gasping for air like I was before. I am almost 11 weeks out.

I was sleeved 12/18. I just had a follow up appointment with my sleep apnea doctor just this past Friday due to needing it for work. I have lost 37 pounds. The doctor told me to bring in the machine if I felt that the pressure got to be too much and they would turn it down. He also said that once I lose 25% body weight I may need another sleep study

My wife and I were both severe, we have both kicked the machines.

I have been using my CPAP for a bunch of years, and think I may be a little dependent on it by now. My sleep specialist asked me to make an appt with him 3 months after surgery to schedule another sleep study. 3 months seems like such a short amount of time for this goal (currently at week 10)! And I will need to conduct the sleep study without the CPAP on, to see if I still need it. It is going to be uncomfortable at first I'm sure, but I am hopeful. I do know that not everyone can kick the CPAP, even with the weight loss.

Same for me! I hated that machine! I'ld wake up having a panic attic feeling claustrophobic, ripping the mask off my face! It would be stuck in my pony tail-horror! I needed a tranquilizer to keep that on 4 hours! After losing enough weight, the snoring stopped and I've been sleeping like a baby without it! Can't wait to return it-dust collector.

I got my bipap mask / machine about 4 months before surgery. It was set at a super high setting and took awhile to get used to it I had to bring it to the hospital for the surgery. Not sure how that worked since I thought they put a tube down my throat and the bipap covers my nose AND mouth.

About two weeks after the surgery, the mask didn't fit my face anymore because of some weight loss. I had to adjust the mask....no complaints there, I was so excited to start losing weight!

I'm 4 weeks post-surgery now and can't wait until I don't need a bipap anymore!

I had moderate sleep apnea and had to use the machine for insurance purposes but I can tell you after dropping significant weight I tunred that sucker in. I sleep like a baby now and that is one of the most satisfying things about this surgery. I no longer am tired in the day, I have energy and my attitude is better from the rest I get.

The reason they ask you to bring it to the hospital is not for the surgery but for post op. recent studies have shown that patients with sleep apnea who receive narcotics are at higher risk of post operative problems such as respiratory distress and cardiac events. This risk is minimized by using prescribed cpap post operatively.

My doctor told me not to use my machine in the hospital because the pressure would blow into the new sleeve. I have not used it since for the same reason did not want to chance a leak. I am 1 month out. My husband said he does not hear me snore, can't really understand if this could be possible but I think it might be! AMEN

I have a Bipap and used it in the hospital but when I got home found I was swallowing too much air and causing gastric reflux to act up so have stopped for now. The best thing is to get re-evaluated just to be sure and I plan to do that soon. I have restless leg syndrome but since I sleep alone do not know if I still snore so the best thing I can advise is to make sure you are getting enough O2 before you decide to stop it all together even if snoring stopped as mine did I still go for periods without taking in a breath

Interesting subject. I have used CPAP for years and although I fought it for years, I finally got used to it and am addicted to it. I have surgery in about a month and sure hope I can get rid of this thing. But how will I know when I'm ready?

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
