ivonneh 25 Posted January 7, 2013 Is it ok to drink your liquids using a straw? It's like I have in the back of my mind that I am not supposed to use a straw to drink my liquids but I don't exactly know why or if it's true at all. Was anyone advised by their doctors not to use a straw?
rswa3319 69 Posted January 7, 2013 yeah I heard it was a bad idea because you suck up a lot more air and have a tendency to drink too much too fast.... I have not had this problem though.
Carol Watts 67 Posted January 7, 2013 I was told the same thing. I will be 3 month post op tomorrow and I tried this past Friday to use a straw it went ok, but did seem to have more gas on stomach

MinaT 669 Posted January 7, 2013 Air was a big issue for me at first, I can use a straw now and I'm 7 months out and I'm fine with it. For the first 4 weeks I swear I used the one ounce medical cups to drink everything with or a shot glass. It was like 6-7 weeks before I could handle drinking out of a Water bottle and even then I took in too much air and it hurt me. Now, it's no problem and I can do a little Water chug if I want to. It gets easier 1 ivonneh reacted to this
DuranFan1969 119 Posted January 7, 2013 I didn't touch a straw for at least 6 months then I randomly found one in my drink and had already used it before I realized what I had done. It didn't feel any different to me, but I do try to avoid straws when possible to be on the safe side. 1 ivonneh reacted to this
MoreganK 164 Posted January 7, 2013 I am just now 6.5 months out, and have just started to use straws comfortably. My doctor told me to wait at least 6 months. I did experiment at 5 months out, and you do really pull in a lot of air. Weird, because you never notice it pre-op. I'd avoid straws until at least 6 months, and then see how you feel using them. I also feel that the wider the straw, the easier it was to drink with.
