Recommended Posts

My sleeve surgery is scheduled for 7:00 AM January 8 and I am getting so nervous! Any last minute advice on what to bring to the hospital and what to have when I get home? Thank you so much ????

It is very natural to get nervous and scared. Just take it one minute at a time. You will do great. I was terrified before my surgery and wrote a blog entry about it. If it helps, feel free to read it.

Bring a firm pillow or other support for your stomach. Comfy comfy clothes, too. I took a sun dress with me (not so bad in October) just so I wouldn't have anything around my midsection at all. Stock up on GasX strips, too!

Thank you both :) I know what you mean about not being able to sleep. I feel like I did before going to have my first child, like I have so much to do to get ready and I'm going to forget something. Or that I may not be able to get down those chewable vitamins. My mind won't turn off

Its quite normal to be nervous, I was and it was my 2nd WLS (didnt sleep the nite b4). Just take it easy, get plenty of rest, Proteins and Water. Please follow the directions of your doctor and if you have any question, dont be afraid to ask (remember no question is a stupid question).

Couple of things I would recommend.

  • Take an almost nude preop picture front, side and back view for you and you alone. Then every 60 days take a new one. You will be amazed.
  • Write a list with 10 reasons why you want this surgery. Then if you have a bad day, pull out list to reread. This is to encourage yourself and focus on goal.
  • Sugar free electrolyte drinks helped me keep hydrated, so keep some on hand, or some smart Water. Did I mention room tempature.drinks. Stupidly I thought cold might be easy. Um, stomach cramps.
  • Might be difficult to get in liquids, this is CRITICAL to your health. I used a shot glass and every 15 minutes I forces myself to drink my protien drink or smart Water an single oz at a time. Never had an emergency room visit.
  • Peppermint tea slight warm was a treat. Decaf of course.
  • I loved my recliner chair for that first few days.
  • Chicken noodle broth instead of those sickenly sweet Protein Shakes.

Everyone is different, I know you will find what works for you. Wishing you the best and a speedy recovery. Be sure to update us on your progress.

No regrets, I love my sleeve.

I just got sleeved on the 4th and still in the hospital, going to go home today after some tests. Make sure you ask for a higher dose of pain meds if you are in pain and don't hesitate to ask for anything because its their job! At first they Had me on a paid med that was not strong enough so as soon as I got up to the room I made sure I got stronger stuff and it makes so much difference. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
