What's more important, water or protein?

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys. I'm a "lightweight" going on 7 weeks out and down about 18 pounds. I really need to maximize my weight loss, as I feel like I am not losing as much as I should have by now. So- I am trying to increase my protien intake to 80 grams a day, usually with shakes, since everything else has so little grams of Protein. However; drinking 2 or 3 shakes a day makes me feel so bloated that I don't always get in my 64 oz. of Water.< /p>

I sometimes fall 10 or 15 oz. short. Does it defeat the purpose (uping my protein) if I can't get in all 64 oz. of water? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Everything I've read says Protein first. If you haven't tried them yet, consider the Isopure Ready To Drink drinks. They have a good amount of Protein, without the air of a shaken powder. My neighbor (3 yrs out) said he lived on Isopure and Miso Soup.

That's my plan.

Less: I'm counting the shakes towards my fluids, but since I'm drinking 2 or 3 shakes daily, I drink them in intervals, so they take up 4 mealtimes, and I still struggle to drink in between. I'm going to keep trying.

Sandy: You are not alone. I haven't had any foods other than what's on my list of high Protein foods and shakes. I don't really understand why me weight loss is like 10 pounds less than everyone else's:( Especially when I read that a lot have crackers, and toast and other carbs. I guess it's just that I need to work harder on the treadmill.

ArcX: I have not tried that. I will check it out. Thank you for the tip.

I think I was at the same amount of weight loss at 7 weeks out. I just reached 3 months post op on Jan. 2nd. I still drink 2 shakes a day. I use the Isopure Protein powder and mix it with milk. One serving of isopure equals 50g of Protein and the milk adds protein also. Plus the milk is a good way to get in Calcium and vit d. I exercise so that tends to make me thirst and usually right after I drink a Protein shake I become thirsty and drink a large glass of Water. I loved Water before surgery but now if I drink plain water it takes forever for me to drink it, so now I mix it with g2 gatorade powder and the water goes down a lot better. I also don't count my carb intake because I need carbs for my workout and overall energy throughout the day. I probably get around 60-100g of carbs but I don't keep track of anything because then I become obsessive and as long as I get in my protein I hardly have room for anything else and my cravings are gone with proper protein intake.

My advice is be patient and it will come off over time. I've come to the realization that I wont be one of those people who sprint to the finish line and realistically I probably wont reach goal until I'm about 1 year post op. According to my "target weight" app I should reach goal around early September and hell that's good enough for me, considering I've NEVER reached goal before. Try to stay positive.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
