Newbie here, getting sleeved 1/30 in St. Louis

Recommended Posts

Hello! Just wanted to submit a thread to introduce myself. I've been reading posts on VST for a couple months now, but would like to start interacting as my surgery date is less than a month away. Such a whirlwind of emotions... Excitement (that's about 90%), a little bit of simultaneous fear and hope. I've been contemplating this for many years, and am now more than ready to take the plunge. I'm in the healthcare industry myself, which is both helpful and harmful, but I know without a doubt this is the right thing for me now. Biggest concern isn't complications, but replacing the emotional eating I've done for so many tears with healthier outlets. Any tips on how you have handled this or plan to handle if would be appreciated. Thanks for reading, and I hope to hear back from some of you!

I have the same concerns. I was sleeved just over 2 weeks ago, and have had no problems sticking to the program, but also still have the desire to eat like I used to. Since I'm not on solid food yet, I don't really know how full I'll feel. I'm hoping solid foods bring a change! I'm looking forward to the responses you get as I will benefit from them as well!

Welcome!!

Thx for your reply! You'll have to keep me up to date as to how you're doing with solid foods once you get there. Are you feeling really hungry at this stage?

I don't know yet. I am self pay and I will learn more when I see the NP in about 10 days. If they truly charge that much for self pay, probably not. I'm glad to hear you're doing well!

Hey there:) I had my surgery May 22nd with Dr. Kumaran at St. Alexius New Start. I'm down 53 pounds since my 1 week pre op. Feeling great! Nice to see some others from the St. Louis area.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
