I was cleared to eat anything 5 weeks out

I was cleared to eat "anything" at 4 weeks. I'm going on 7 weeks out, and started eating Jerky this week. I just chew, chew, chew, and it goes down fine. I love it because in a 1 oz. bag, there are 18 grams of Protein. So for me, it's good to have once or twice a week. However; I'm sure it's different for some people. For example; I have had moist chicken, but cannot get my two ounces down without getting the slimes, or throwing up...With this surgery, it is learning through trial and error, what you can tolerate. At least that has been my experience.

During the losing phase of your journey, I would not eat beef Jerky, it is too high in sodium and will make you retain Water. You want to maximize your weight loss the first few months after surgery, that is when you will lose the most. There are a lot of foods you CAN have but will hamper your weight loss. I love beef jerky and eat it as a snack but I have been at my goal weight for almost 1 year now.

Peanuts aren't the best option because of their fat content. Almonds are better. You still have to be careful because they can be sliders. I stuck to deli meats and low fat cheese in the beginning. I have added almonds, Mini Babybel and wonton wrapper chips. I cut them in squares, spray them with cooking spray and either add a bit of salt or Mrs. Dash then bake them at 350 for around 8 minutes. They satisfy the crunch, give a bit of Protein and are pretty low carb.

Has anyone found a strange metallic taste in their mouth after eating beef Jerky? It is quite strong and almost acts as a deterrent. I do not eat beef that often and have had beef jerky 3x since surgery 6 months ago. I hope it tastes better in the future.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
