There's not much I have trouble eating. I'm pretty lucky. All in all this surgery has been a lot easier than I expected.

Hi Everyone

I am still Pre-op.... just a question. The surgeon said that part of the stomach removed contained hormones that triggered hunger. so you are not feeling hungry all the time like I am now... is he exaggerating ????

Noorganicforme- you are correct, the area of the stomach, containing the ghrelin, is removed. It's a different kind of hunger now. I am 4 mos post-op & my body tells me when I need to eat, but it's very different than before. Best of luck to you :)

Your stomach produces and excretes the hormone ghrelin, which causes the feeling of hunger. Cannabis also does this, which is why smoking pot makes you hungry (just some additional info). Anyway, the portion of your stomach that is removed is the part that makes the majority of ghrelin, but the remaining stomach WILL still produce it. So you may continue to feel hunger (I do) post-op, but it won't be as bad as what you feel now. Also, even though you may still feel hungry, you won't be able to eat but just a bit and it will go away. So it won't be like it is pre-op. Some people have NO hunger, but I'm not one of them.

It's true about the hunger feeling different. A lot of us have posted on several threads about stomach acids and the new sound affects remind some people as hunger signs. For me when I need food, my body reacts (burping, gurgling), but if I ate one tiny bite too much-burping again. It's a new skill-set acknowledging physical hunger and need for fuel and when you've had enough. Two things I obviously have had a hard time with my whole life. It's work. But it's working! I feel lighter than I have felt in almost 20 years! Best decision of my life!

Sorry mzrich my fault the thread got off track.....

You know in my family when someone had heart burn or was gassy... my mom used to make them drink herbal "Mint Tea" . Maybe that would help you if you sipped some Mint Tea.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
