Struggles with not drinking while eating

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

So this week I'm on pureed food. I'm finding it SO difficult not to drink while eating food. I've done it a few times, and then I can't eat as much, making me feel full super fast. I know that I'm not supposed to because it makes the food slide through faster, so I'm trying very hard not do it.

I've always been a huge drinker of beverages while eating. After eating, my mouth just feels so dry and I want to reach for a nice glass of cold Water. I was thinking maybe gum might be a good option? I can pop it in my mouth, and boom, saliva to help with thirst. (My nut says gum is okay to chew and mints).

What do you after you eat to help stop the urge to drink something? Was this something easy for you to overcome or do you still struggle with it?

Any tips would be great!

I have the same issue, in fact it has always felt like food stuck halfway down without something to wash it down with. I've found that when needed a very tiny sip (like 1/2 teaspoon or less) of something can help without being so much Fluid to push things through. Moister foods I've gotten used to and can get down without, but sometimes the drier things need that tiny bit of liquid to work.

All I can say is it gets easier. Now it's second nature but took a long time to get used to it.

It gets easier! I have found it toughest when out to eat with others and I'm finished eating and we are just sitting around chatting. At home and in the lunch room at work, I don't have a drink handy. At restaurants I do get a Water and play with it and a straw sometimes. My one coworker who drinks a lot of water will sometimes swap our glasses so it doesn't look strange to others.

Yes it does become second nature now even when I go out, I drink until my food come and then get my Water In a to go truck so that when I can drink I can. It's just a process and when you do it long enough it's nothing.

It helps to take smaller bites and chew more when you're eating drier foods. Chew chew chew....try not to give into the temptation to sip. It's a bad habit, and starting a new healthier life is all about extinguishing those bad habits and developing new ones.

I don't think that we (sleevers) have the issue of Water or other beverages causing food to "slide through". We still have our pyloric valve that holds items in our smaller stomach - compared to someone who has had gastric bypass and they have a man-made hole at the end of their stomach leading to their re-routed intestines. (Scary thought, isn't that?!!) Although I do have to agree that drinking will fill me up if I do this while eating. I do still take little sips if I absolutely need to. Now that I'm a little over 5 months into this, it's mostly a habit to not order a beverage at a restaurant. (Mostly, sometimes I really AM thirsty so I get a large glass FULL of ice with a little water added.) ;)

I agree! It doesn't even bother me anymore.

When i'm eating I have about 100 mills of Water and drink it slowly with my meals. I've lost 41pounds in a month. As long as you don't go overboard you will be fine. And eats lots of Protein. I bought Unjury it works great. Get it on line.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I guess like most of you said, it takes time to get used to it. Just gotta get the hang of it. I think not ordering drinks when out is a good idea, even if I get odd looks/remarks from servers.

My mother offered me tea right after I finished Breakfast this morning, and I said I CAN'T DRINK A HALF HOUR AFTER I EAT! So, even the temptation is there from family :[

I was told the same thing. So I've been doing a lot better because it was habit to eat and drink at the same time. I forgot 1 day and took a drink. I thouhht the pain would never go away! At home I never eat with a drink nearby and at restaurants I push them away when they bring my food.

I was never one to drink WITH a meal, but I struggle with the urge to drink right after a meal. I just can't keep a drink nearby. I forget sometimes when I'm away from home, but I'm trying hard!

Everyone is different. For me, my body enforces the no Fluid with meal rule with pain and discomfert. liquid too soon after a meal feels like stomach is being flushed before digestion is complete. It's a feeling you don't want repeated

My doctor has changed the "rule" on no drinking w/ meals, teeny tiny sips are OK and for me this helps. I too end my meal and want a swig of liquid to sort of finish things off. I keep it small and I am thankful to have the swig. Since I am full I will get into trouble if I were to continue drinking.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
