Can you eat more close to TOM?

Recommended Posts

I am just the opposite. For about three days before and the entire time during I am just about only able to do liquids. I am so tight during that time it is ridiculous.

I get really tight for about 5 days when I ovulate, then it slowly loosens up from there. Actual TOM isn't a problem at all -- restriction is about at normal. Strangely, I carry Water weight (I'm one of those who weighs every day) during ovulation but not so much during TOM, so they must be related....

I always think I can eat more. In fact, I am sure that I crave carbs more during that T.O.M. than any other time. Usually with good restriction, I can minimise carbs but for a few days a month, crackers & chips start to look good to me. EEK!

I am so glad someone asked the qustion, What the heck is "TOM". I am uselly up on a lot of email shorthand, but.......... this got me. So now I know, the qustion is................ what will I do with this newly gotten information ??????? As someone that does not deal with that time of the month, I guess we can call it a number of things, ie: Flying the Flag............ etc. So I guess TOM is cool. But what about us guy's ????? I know we are few, but we are out there. I do however find that my band is tighter in the morning, and if I just have a shake and a small lunch, dinner is good. BUT............ If I eat a big Breakfast, the rest of the day is "SHOT", it's almost like I have no restriction at all, and this could be ATOM, (any time of the month) not just, "That Time".

FuelMan, your post cracked me up!!

Ginger, to answer your question-YES, definately I can feel out of whack during TOM. I don't know what scientific proof could backup my statement but I'd say it's hormone related. I think hormones mess with your emotions and it's really the emotions that make us feel so hungry. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it! Actually, if I fight the urge to splurge then I usually make it through relatively unscathed. However, if I give in to a craving then I usually fall off the wagon and get myself off track. So...I try my best to stick to life as usual until TOM is over!

Hi there,

I too am approaching TOM and find that I can eat a lot more! So much so that I am considering a fill. I feel as though I have lost much of my restriction and don't understand why. Usually I cant eat half the amount I am able to around this time. I am glad to hear Im not the only one...

Oh, heck no. I can PB Soup near TOM. Bad TOM for me! About 4 days before, to one day in, is my tightest. I'm lucky to get a thick liquid down without having to lean on the island and wait for the pain to pass.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
