hanners2009 40 Posted January 4, 2013 I am 3 weeks post op and i have 20 month old 40 lb baby. I have been toting him around since i was 1 week post op. Had a check up yesterday and he said that is one reason i am still hurting so bad but gotta do it for the babies. I would say ask for help for about a month or 2 just to be on the safe side. You wont be able to do everything but.just let your body tell you
SleeveNZ 219 Posted January 4, 2013 I had a 5 month old fatty and needed help for a week
alley-gator 96 Posted January 4, 2013 I have a 20 month old who is about 26 lbs. I am not supposed to lift him for 6-8 weeks. He burned his hand at 11 days post op & I had no choice but to pick him up, and I could totally feel it later that day & the next couple. My Dr says lifting won't do any damage to your actual sleeve, but it will cause the stomach incisions to POP open, and they are so used to heal once that happens. I would get help for at least a month if possible. If not, I get it...out of necessity sometimes we have to break rules.
mommyradd 115 Posted January 4, 2013 I have a four year old, two year old, and a one year old. The two babies are still in diapers, and need to be lifted onto the changing table. My hubby was able to take 6 days off of work, plus one weekend so I had 8 days of help. Not ideal. Since then, I did everything myself, and my soreness in my incision lasted for 3-4 weeks. If you are in a position to have help, take it until you feel well on your way. Otherwise; change the baby in a safe place on the floor, to avoid lifting. Also, my doctor gave me no lifting restrictions. He said if it felt too heavy, don't lift it! Best of luck to you:)
Sadlers1999 169 Posted January 4, 2013 I try not to lift as much, but I have to sometimes. My two year old (30 lbs) knows I have an owie, but he still needs to be lifted on occasion. I would say, at minimum, have help for two weeks if you can find any.
dreamerfalava 6 Posted January 4, 2013 This Is a question I have been wondering because I'm a week post op and I'm a nanny I work with a 2 yr old chunk and she is a pick me up put me down little girl I'm so bored at being at home I want to go back to work but idk when the best time is do u think after my staples are removed I can go back to work?
Sadlers1999 169 Posted January 4, 2013 I didn't have staples that needed to be removed, so I can't say for certain, but it sounds like it would be a good idea to wait.
clk 3,519 Posted January 4, 2013 I had two year old twins (both somewhere around thirty pounds) at the time of surgery. My husband left to go TDY just a day or two after I got home from Mexico. I would say I had about three or four full days (between Mexico and Germany) to recover before going it alone. I did just fine. Instead of lifting the kids for changes I got on the floor to do them. I didn't carry them any more than I had to, so if you have a child that isn't walking yet I'd try to set up a station in the house much the way you would for bed rest if you were pregnant. Try to live on one floor or in one area to limit carrying and stairs. Have as much done as possible before the surgery. Stock your pantry, have your shake mixes, make some meals for the rest of the family that freeze or keep well and give your house a good cleaning before surgery. It makes life afterward much easier. I bought a few new toys, DVDs and craft activities for the kids prior to surgery so that if they got more rambunctious I could break out something new to entertain them for a while. I was never in serious pain after surgery but everyone is different. My biggest issue was that I needed to sleep in the recliner for a few nights because I'm a side sleeper. I had no lifting restriction put on me but I kept it to a minimum and spent as much time as possible relaxing with the kids. I'd say that I felt back to mostly normal (sluggish from low calories, of course) within the first week post op. I think that it's completely do-able if you are well prepared. ~Cheri

I also slept in an arm chair. It didn't recline, but I used an ottoman for my feet. The idea to have play stations on one floor sounds good, too. For me, currently, the biggest challenge is leaving the house with my 2 and 4 year olds. The 4 year old can follow instructions pretty well, but it's whether or not she CHOOSES to follow them. The 2-year old is the youngest of 4 kids, so he truly is a "baby" even if he is not a baby. When he wants to be cuddled, I tell him to follow me to the couch (or armchair) and he can climb up on me. Diaper changes are on the floor. So, that works. Outside the house, though, I can't lift him into a shopping cart, If we are at a public bathroom and he needs to wash his hands, I half-heartedly lift him to the sink. Honestly, I don't feel that bad at 2 1/2 weeks out, BUT I keep wanting to avoid tearing something and/or getting into pain and the doctor was pretty assertive that I should not do any heavy lifting until the end of January/beginning of July. Ultimately, the lifting thing should be as much as you can limit it and still function with your kids.
Butlersh 213 Posted January 4, 2013 No lifting restrictions was backing caring for my 10 month old alone by day 6. It actually helped get things back to normal and get me moving freely again. Good luck! 1 Banned member reacted to this
ashelaine 383 Posted January 4, 2013 I have a 9,6, and 3 year old- well he will be 3 on Monday. He is STILL not potty trained- we rocked floor diaper changes- I will say I tried it myself at 4 dpo and it HURT. He wasn't cooperating and it was pretty much miserable. But I tried again that Monday and I was fine (3 days later). He is old enough that he could climb and deal with some cuddle time.
