5 mins per bite

Recommended Posts

How do ppl measure the five minutes? I hope that down the road I can just know when it's five minutes because looking at my phone all the time sucks lol. How does everyone else handle the 5 minutes?

I never did a "five minute per bite". I measure out my food, use a small fork/spoon, take very small bites at a time and chew very slowly. Also you can put your utensil down between bites, this should work for you. Good Luck.

I've never heard this rule ...? Is it 5 minutes between bites or chew for 5 minutes? I'm post op & today was my first day on soft foods... Been counting how many times I chew everything (is that weird? Lol) so far no issues... Really surprised at how small my portion sizes are before I feel satisfied :)

I don't measure time. It usually goes bite bite ...chew chew chew chew chew chew.. swallow..... feel a bit of pressure either in my chest or my back... put the fork down for a few minutes until pressure subsides.... bite bite... repeat. Today I had a cup of Soup. Took me about 3 hours to finish the thing.

Thanks for the insight. I've been following everything laid out by my doc so hopefully I can find a happy medium where it doesn't feel like I'm the center of attention at the table. Right now I'm in Vegas 9 weeks after surgery and everything has hit me like a ton of bricks.

Congrats

You actually helped me. I was thinking 5 min was not enough! Lol

I'm not sleeved and did not know about the 5 minutes.

I don't want to start something or come off as preachy, but my surgeon and Nut are big on a meal "time," mostly to set folks up for success and to avoid setting up a pattern for grazing. So, even with those first Protein Drinks post-op, there was a 30 minute limit to the meal. If you're not finished in 30 minutes, wrap it up, refrigerate it or toss it out. Wait 30 minutes and begin sipping Water or other sugar free liquids. 30 minutes before the next meal, stop the liquids. Space the mini meals about 3 hours apart. Noshing on something for 3 hours may catch up with you when your sleeve relaxes and capacity is greater, and the "honeymoon" is over. Only love for you guys! I went on vaca at 6 weeks out and felt like everyone was staring at me...the more I relax and go with the flow and listen to my body, the better I do. Down 80 pounds in 8 months, and things reeeeaaaalllyyy slow down around 6 months!

I think that every Dr. and every NUT does something different. Never heard of the 5 minute or 30 minute rule. They basically want me to get the right number of nutrients and Protein in. I got popped by my Nut last visit for not eating enough. She wanted me to set my phone to ring every 2 hours and eat something. So I overall I don't think that there are hard and fast rules, nor is every rule wrong. Just different Drs. do what they think works for them. Your mileage may vary!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
