atelux17 135 Posted January 3, 2013 I'm an RN who recently had VSG on 11/16. I'm making a poster about bariatric surgery. Part of the poster is about why people have weight loss surgery. I thought of few things, but if anyone has something I can add or research I'd love to hear. Here is what I have so far: Why choose weight loss surgery? 1. 95% of diets fail leading to wt regain or increased weight 2. Resolution of comorbidities: sleep apnea, diabetes, joint pain, depression, mobility issues etc 3. Difficult to treat obesity without surgery as a tool due to addiction to food, social& physical barriers to losing weight 4. Cost of obesity: extra medical expenses, food costs 5. Improvement in mood, energy, & interpersonal relations 6. Increases life span& allows for a more active life Thanks guys!
funinthesun00 157 Posted January 3, 2013 Actually, on your #1, I read that that statistic is after 2 years. After 5 years it's 98%. Not great odds.
rdoactv 218 Posted January 3, 2013 Quality of life, social self exclusion, chronic depression...I guess in a roundabout these are kind of included in your list though.

Even women like me, who had no health issues, choose to have 85% of our stomach's removed. We're tired of fighting to maintain a weight of 200+. It IS unhealthy, and eventually, as we age, our weight will go higher and higher, resulting in at best, bad knees. I wanted to buy cute clothes, look good in them and have fun shopping for once in my adult life. Mission accomplished. I call it preventive maintainence, a win/win! I decided on WLS because I am shaped just like my mother (apple) and could see my future. I was pre-diabetic, with a lower BMI (still obese) when I had surgery on 9/10. I couldn't be happier with my decision - even tonight when I ate too fast and felt like crying because I was so uncomfortable!
