Lil vent session here...

I know that the gastric sleeve is a tool and not a cure. My surgery weight was 272, and as of yesterday i was a delightful 230. Today , yes today I stand at a whopping 234. On every scale in my house. I followed my diet to a t, upped my Water consumption, take my Vitamins, and exercise almost daily ( kickboxing, cardio). Nothing. I thought I was happier at first, now I find that all i do is stress, stress stress. Im 100% discouraged with this surgery. Im sure when I go back for a follow up next month my dr will be disappointed. I just dont know what to do anymore. My hair is thinning, i feel bloated i am just FED UP!!!!

Your weight fluctuates daily, that's why its recommended to only weigh once a week. Wait till next Thursday and you'll see that its gone back down. Try not to be discouraged by the scales, are you doing measurements as well?

its really hard not to get discouraged when your weight was a big part of your life. I havent done any measurements yet. I have some new items that i got in a size smaller that fit, but I can also fit some of my older things too. I was just told on another forum to try Water pills.

It is hard to not get discouraged, weighting everyday is a easy way to get discouraged though, so don't. I doubt you're retaining Water, I'm sure its just the regular weight fluctuation that we all see if we weigh daily. If smaller clothes are fitting you're on the right track, also keep in mind that muscle weighs more than fat

ARe you unhappy with your overall weight loss or the fact that you weigh 4 pounds more then you did some other time - on every scale on your house? I don't mean to sound unkind, but maybe taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture would make you feel better. I started with so much to lose - can you imagine I had lost something like 35-40# before ANYBODY noticed that i might have lost a little something? If I had let that get me down, I probably wouldn't be near goal now and wearing cute clothes and all that. Keep your eye on the prize and don't let the little stuff get you down!

Don't be a slave to your scale, it is just a tool. I need to weigh daily and accept variation as "normal" but for some people that drives them bonkers. Don't go bonkers, do what works for you!

Please don't take Water pills. Water is not your problem. Did you have surgery to lose weight or lose fat? I only care about fat loss. Retaining water, building muscle, slow BMs....all these things will increase weight. Your fat loss will counter act all those things....it already has. You've lost over 40 pounds. It IS working. Quit weighing and start living a healthier life. The weight will come off as you get healthier.

Yes, weight can fluctuate by pounds in a day. I'm sorry to say this is very normal ... you are not unique.

Are you wanting to lose weight or lose fat? Stop using the scale as it only measures weight. Your real barometer should be how clothes feel on you, measurements and how you feel overall. I weighed myself once a month and always saw a loss so I didn't get that head-spin, what's wrong with me discouragement. That type of thinking will only sabotage your effort, so stop torturing yourself.

Your body converts calories to glycogen which is stored in your liver and muscles. Glycogen has weight. When glycogen is stored in your muscles, it must bond in a 4 to 1 ratio with Water, so if your body stores one extra pound of glycogen than it did the day before, with the Water, it will actually be 5 pounds. As far as fat and all that ... 1 pound of weight = 3,500 calories. If you burn 3,500 calories more than you take in, then you lose a pound. Eat 3,500 calories more than your burn, you gain a pound.

So, you gained 4 pounds in one day. Do you think you consumed 4 x 3,500 = 14,000 more calories than you burned? Most likely not. Do you believe that those 4 pounds are 4 pounds of fat? Most likely not.

If you have been reading the boards I'm sure you have seen this over and over again. Get rid of the scale. It can only hurt you.

Same thing has happened to me twice now since surgery. The first time I panicked, the second time I was less distressed. I'm a slow looser as well. When I see everyone else's weight loss on here I get so jealous! But, I'm down 35 pounds total, which is more than I've lost in years! I have to try and stay positive. My nutritionist says I'm right on track.

One last thing. As much as I'd like to lose more quickly, I've noticed that I don't have any loose skin with my SLOW weight loss. It's giving everything time to adjust and I don't seem to be loosing muscle. I probably sound like I'm trying to make lemonade out of lemons! But I'm reminding myself of the good things as well I guess! Hang in there!

I weigh every morning but I do not stress over the number.

I as well lose very slow about 10 lbs a month. But in 4 months I went from sz 22-24 to 12-14. I ran 1 5k in Nov and 2 in Dec.

Look for what u can do know after surgery. Maybe u can Walk without pain, got off the c- pap, tying shoes without huffing and puffing. Able to wipe without any problem.

Bending , standing, exercising.. look at all the positive.

One more thing u didn't gain your wgt in one day so u will not lose it in 1 day.

Hang in there.

Keep in mind - you can gain muscle when working out. This will cause you to gain a little weight (but good weight). You could also be retaining Water. There are so many reasons. There are some great suggestions about weighing once a week in lieu of every day. There will be times you will naturally slow down. It is called a plateau. This can last days or weeks. Once you get through it, weight starts dropping again.Stick with it - it is a long process but worth it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
