My journey so far! Surg 10/23/12

Recommended Posts

Hi! My name is Melissa and I was sleeved on October 23,2012. I am 32 years old, & i felt like I was in a 55 yr olds body...I have a wonderful husband of 10 yrs and 3 beautiful children....But why was I so depressed & unhappy?? I had accepted that I was overweight & thats how it was going to be...i was 150 throughout highschool & at the time I always thought i was fat, and needed to lose weight. Looking back id love to be that weight again! Before surg I remember just fantasizing about what life would be like to look and feel good again.I cannot remember the last time i got a second look in public! I was feeling like an old shoe. Going out was not fun, shopping, dancing, nothing was fun. The simplest things like taking my kids to the beach were depressing and embarrasing,.and i took all the joy and fun out of their experience bc of how unhappy I was with myself! You get the gist? So in April of 2012 i decided to look into wls. My initial choice was lapband, but after reading ppls stories on this forum and my drs advice,.i chose to have the sleeve. My beginning weight 2 months ago was 272,Im now 218!! So over 50lbs lost! I am very happy with my decision to have wls & would do it all over again! Was it a long process? YES! Was i in pain after surg? Yes! But those things are minimal compared to the happiness, health and self-confidence i now have. If you are undecided about your decision feel free to contact me. Id love to help & support you on your exciting journey!

Had my surgery 10/15 and your so right that the minimal pain and obstacles that your have to go thru don't amount to anything once you begin to feel free from the obesity.

Congratulations!! I can certainly understand how you felt and why you looked into the surgery! You're doing a wonderful job, I was sleeved on 11/15 and I'm down just about 25 lbs (24.6 to be exact! LOL) and it is a great feeling of accomplishment to know we are on our way! My biggest worry is maintaining it!

Just remember its a lifestyle change not a 'diet' ...my Dr strongly advises to not count calories and such..just eat real food, & eat to not be hungry ,.dont eat to be full.... Just satisfy your hunger. It takes getting used too, thats for sure. food was always such a big part of my life. I do miss stuffing my face,.esp this past Holidays with all the goodies. But then it was also nice to have lost 3 lbs and not gained during the holidays! Good Luck!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
