VSG and Hernia Surgery - anyone?

Recommended Posts

Evidently I have a haital hernia - I didn't even know I had this (or acid reflux) before I had my pre-surgery endoscope. My surgery is Jan 15th and the surgeons will be stitching that up in addition to my VSG. Has anyone else gone through this procedure at the same time as their VSG? I am just wondering if there are any additional complications, things to watch out for, etc?

Hi,

I had the same thing. Also did not know I had it :) I did not experience acid reflux prior to surgery. After surgery I have experienced it daily, and Dr has me on pepcid. What I noticed after surgery is that (most likely due to swelling) I could hardly get anything in my pouch. You may feel like it is stuck right at the base of your esophagus where your stomach meets, that's where the surgery repair was done. I am 10 days post op now and having a MUCH easier time getting thing down, but the first week was hard. Don't worry about the requirements they give you for protein/fluids as your body simply wont be able to intake that much initially. Feel free to message me with any other questions you think of!

I had a hernia repair and vsg done at the same time. I had no problems after surgery... I did suffer from reflux daily, now I'm on a daily anti-acid and have had no more issues. Good Luck!

I too found out during the scope that I had a hiatal hernia and had no clue and no problems with it prior to surgery. What I did notice was a lot of gas getting stuck from the sternum under the ribcage to the left and it was painful, they told me this was probably worse because of the hernia repair. I did start to have reflux if I ate too fast.. but it isn't terrible and I take a prevacid every morning and it seems to be helping. I had no complications from the hernia repair either.

I had a hernia that I wasn't aware of. I had heartburn a lot before. Since being sleeved and hernia repaired, no more heartburn unless I eat a lot of garlic.

My doctor discovered a hiatal hernia and repaired it during surgery. Gave me six pictures of my new stomach and repaired hernia taken during the surgery. Gross and fascinating at the same time! Anyone else get pictures?

OH YES!!! I got pictures.. YUCK! LOL I am not one who wants to see any of that.. No thanks, I'm good.. During my scope I had my eyes closed and my doc taps me and says oh look look, see your stomach and your hernia.. I say, no I'm good, he says open your eyes and look this is cool, I again say, no, really I'm good... LOL he continues to tap me saying look, look, look like a kid in a candy store LOL.. Ok I finally turn my head open one eye and go oh lovely.. so we finish and the next thing I know he's handing me a bunch of pictures. I said what is this for, he replies, you, don't you want to take these home and show your family? REALLY?? NO!!! EWE!!! LOL... my husband the Navy Medic and EMT of course LOVED to see them. After the surgery my surgeon gave my husband more pictues.. LOL I have yet to see them! Thank goodness!!! LOL

I had my surgery Dec.21 and I too had a hiatal hernia repair, I have not had any complications thus far. I didn't know I had it either but I'm glad they repaired it at the same time!

I had a hiatal hernia repair with surgery. I did not experience acid reflux prior to surgery, except every once in a while after certain foods. Since surgery I have dealt with the worst heartburn imaginable on a daily basis. I was on Pepcid once a day, but was taking it twice a day along with many TUMS. My Dr switched me to Prilosec yesterday so I am praying that I get relief. If this does not go away it is going to make me completely regret this surgery. I'd rather be fat than have the feeling that my esophagus is literally being eaten away from the inside :(

I had one repaired. The only thing the doc told me was not to do any heavy lifting for two months. I had no other problems.

I also found out I had a hernia. I thought I had acid reflux and heartburn, didn't have a clue it could be a hernia and was shocked to hear it. I have horrible heartburn and acid reflux regularly wakes me up at night. I seriously doubt it could get worse, but these posts make me wonder just how miserable I will be post surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
