I'm 60 & thinking of getting sleeved in late January or early February,I will self pay so I'm going to Mexico to have it done. I'm from northern Canada & it costs $18,000 here. I'm nervous about that because I will be coming back to Arizona to recouperate as we spend some of the winter there. I have health insurance in Canada but not in Arizona for any complications from the operation. My hubbie said he would fly me home if I becam sick. I'm waiting for my cardiologist to clear me for surgey as I hav had a heart attack in 2008. So glad I fo this site. Anyone else that went to Mexico,I sure love to hear your experience. Thanks.

Where are you going in Mexico? I went there. I hope you're going to Mexicali. It's so easy to drive in from Arizona. My parents lived there, and I went to Mexico by myself and came home by myself.

Just read all you can, and research the surgeon before you pick one. .

I turned 61 this year. I had the gastric sleeve on November 4th. Since starting with the Bariatric Center of Kansas City in Aug 2014, I am down 26 lbs. I had doubts in the beginning, and still struggle thru some appetizing TV commercials (pizza, fried chicken etc), but know I can do this. The pre-op diet (liquids and Protein shakes) was the hardest part for me due to allergies to sugar-free product ingredients. Surgery went smooth as silk. I was in surgery around 1130 am and went home around 930 am the next day. Pain was so minimal, I think I took 4 doses total between hospital time and outpatient.

As far as joint pain and exercising, I have two bad knees (snap, crackle and pop all the time), have plates in one leg with several screws after a severe ankle fracture (with leg dislocation) and constant tenderness in the other from a bad ankle sprain the same day as the fracture on the other ankle. I was in a wheelchair for almost 5 months last year. Water exercises helped immensely in getting back on my feet after surgery and recovery time from those injuries. The knees--well, that's a whole different matter. But I know the less weight I have bearing on those joints, the better it will be for me in the long run. You just have to pace yourself and quit when it starts hurting.

I can't wait to be able to get back to the pool and start swimming and Water aerobics. I also do the recumbent exercise bicycle, and while I have to watch the intensity with my knees, it's a great workout for the legs and thighs. They also make a recumbent (sitting down) elliptical trainer.

Good luck all!

I'm really down in the dumps. I had back surgery a week ago, and I hate that I can hardly move. I am not supposed to bend in any way, or twist and it's really hard. It's hard to keep your back straight 24 hours a day. I am afraid I screwed it up because I am in more pain than I was when I got out of the hospital.

I am really freaking out that that I am going to gain since I can't exercise at all.

Hi Oregondaisy, Are you feeling any better? I know its just 2 days later but sometimes things can improve quickly.

You won't gain if you are eating within the guidelines of the bariatric food plan. It's all about calorie deficit

I'm exactly 4 months out. Naughty me hasn't even begun exercising yet. I'm still losing, so just stay with the plan.

I wish I could be like you. I exercise 4 times a week and ride my bike on my off days. Just got bad news yesterday. I am having knee surgery on the 25th. I am a below the knee amputee and the sugery is on my good leg. I hope this will not effect my weight loss. I just got off a three week stall. I am so unhappy. Do not think I will ever be thin.

My ability to exercise has been all over the place, depending upon which condition is flaring up at the time. What my sleeve has done for me since my surgery (12/23/2014) is get rid of 65 of the hundred pounds I need to lose. I can move with less pain. The inflammation throughout my body is less, allowing me to reduce pain meds so that I am not a zombie 24/7.

Pre-op,my arms and legs were very weak, and my spine was collapsing under its heavy load. I have already had one fusion. My spine doctor is waiting on me to drop the last 40 pounds before he operates again so I am getting spinal epidurals to hold off the process.

I have slowly worked my way up from no ankle weights and one pound hand weights, to 1 pound ankle weights and 5 pound hand weights. Today, in a fit of boldness, I was able to do my strength training with 3 pounds ankle weights and 10 pounds each hand weights!

This is such a gradual process. There are days when I am just too exhausted (post-stroke fatigue) to do much, so I do Sit and Be Fit kind of stuff. I have a DVD that I use a couple of times a week, Leslie Sansone's Walk Your Belly Flat. It has three 1 mile chapters and I can never make it past the first mile in the living room. If I fizzle, then I lean into my walker. If I can't stand any longer, then I sit in a chair and march in place.

So, even though I realistically can't keep up with the youngsters on here, I do what I can every day. I suppose that when the inevitable full lumbar fusion has to happen, my exercise will be just to walk to the bathroom.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
