Surgery scheduled for January 22

Recommended Posts

The pre surgery diet starts on jan. 8th, a day after my birthday. I'm starting to feel very anxious! I've wanted this for a year. Maybe I am nervous because of the unknown. Is recovery long? I'm not supposed to lift over ten pounds for a month. Am I going to be down for a month? Does anyone find themselves really missing food? I find myself eating a lot lately knowing that soon I will not be eating certain foods or eating like that anymore. I'm so ready to change my life, and I need these strict guidelines to follow to be successful. I have lots of plans. I just feel so much anxiety.

This preop liquid diet is rough, yesterday I had a Migraine and could not get it to go away!! Today is much better!! 7 days of nothing but Protein shakes and clear liquid is hard, but I know it is necessary!! I've already lost 7 lbs!

Good luck!!

The recovery times are going to be different depending on your overall health and general physical condition. I'm just 6 weeks out, and I have pretty much be doing what ever I want for about 3 weeks. I was told not to lift more than 25 lbs for the first month, but it is really to let the surgery spots heal. I don't think that you will be down an entire month, but it is possible. You will miss some foods, we all do. But keep in mind that at some point you should be able to eat whatever you want, just not a lot of it. You may not want to eat what you were eating before, as the appetite and taste will change. Everyone has some foods that just won't go down like they did pre-surgery. Some of that goes away over time, some doesn't. Either way, making this change to improve your overall health is a very good thing!

My surgery was rescheduled for the 21st so I begin my pre-op diet next monday and even though I am nervous I am more excited! I even went shopping in boxes of mine that I had in storage over the holidays that hold a bunch of clothes from my smaller days (which were a long time ago)! Im lucky that I dont have children or a job that requires a lot of lifting so my dr told me that I should be fine within a week after surgery.

What a great idea! I have a basket of panties I haven't been able to wear forever. :) I have jeans hanging up that I'm looking forward to wearing at some point. I have three boys under the age of 8! It should be interesting! Good luck!

Thank you! I'm feeling so good about the surgery now! I start my two week diet on Tuesday, and I'm ready to start eating lots of veggies! When did you start exercising after the surgery?

I start my diet on Tuesday! Tomorrow is my birthday, and I will make it the last day of unhealthy eating. ;) good luck tomorrow!! We should stay in touch since our surgeries are so close. do you mind sharing your weight? Mine is about 290. I never ever thought I'd make it to that weight.

I don't mind. I was at 220 but now I'm down to 214, my goal is 130. I am having a hard time with the diet. What I don't get is why some people can do shakes and I'm stuck with nasty stuff that's all liquid aside from some veggies! I tried the oatmeal they gave me and it was like eating flour and Water.....I won't be attempting that again. Also some people are told to do 3 days of Clear liquids before surgery.....it's odd how the same surgery has different versions of the preop diet

I don't get oatmeal. I can have two shakes a day, two cups of veggies, two cups of skim milk, and a couple of pieces of fruit. I think I'd prefer one more shake over having the fruit. I wasn't feeling hungry until about four pm. I'm hungry now after my veggies and cup of milk. I only have to do one day of clear liquids the day before surgery.

Yeah I have to do one day of clear fluids the day before but I wasn't told I could have fruit or even skim milk. I have Soups and drinks that mix only with Water which all taste mediocre so far!

How is it going? Today is the easiest day so far. I don't understand why you can't have veggies.

I am having so much trouble with the pre-op diet, I was originally scheduled for 01/17/13 and they rescheduled me to 01/22/13 because the Doctor was overbooked. I am only allowed the Protein Drinks, cottage cheese, yogurt and then veggies and fruit. But by 5 pm I am so hungry. I have cheated, tonight I ate some vegetable Soup, but I am staying within the calories that I am supposed to. Not sure if it is the calories they are wanting or if it is the types of food that we are allowed to eat.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
