No bowel since surgery.. what should i do?

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved on 12/20 (13 days post op) and I havent had 1 bowel movement since the big cleanse (pre-surgery). I have been getting very little liquids in since surgery and think this may be the cause. however, its starting to scare me a bit because I'm at a stall only 13days out. Presurgery lost 9 pounds (247), left surgery with 11 pound gain (258), and 1 week post op was 239. This is the second week and since about 9 days post op I've been at 234 no movement. Nevermind the stall, I just want the bowel. Been drinking apple juice because I don't want a stool softener and end up with the craps, but was there anything anyone did to alleviate this problem. I left a message with my doctor on some possible solutions to this but was hoping someone out there had any suggestions... Please help!

I think you hit upon the answer--more fluids and stool softener. That is a long time to go without a bowel movement and you definitely don't want it to get any worse. More walking will help too. You can add some Miralax to your Water, it will help. I really struggle with getting enough fluids too--water is the least comfortable thing to swallow--but you can't get that dehydrated. Take the day off and get your belly back in line! ^_^ good luck

Constipation after surgery is common. I would suggest using Milk of Magnesia to get your bowels moving. increase your Fluid intake as much as you can. dehydration can cause constipation.

I was formerly as regular as clockwork, now it's a struggle.

They have several kinds of stool softerner. I use a gel stool softener in the morning, another type of tablet softener with a mild laxative property in the evening, and take Fiber supplements as well.

I drink as much as I can hold, and eat nuts due to their high Fiber content.

Constipation can be an ongoing issue, so we just have to learn to deal with it.

Wait, have you eaten anything since surgery? If not & you are still on liquids, this is fairly normal.

I know this is gonna sound bad, but, has anything been happening back there? Any flatulence? If yes then you're fine.

liquid in = liquid out.

Lots of flatulence and I've been probably getting about 30oz of liquid in a day and about 10g of Protein. still no bowel. But i have had luck with flatulence. I'm hoping what little i do have is just slowly making its way down to come on out!

if you are only getting 30 oz of Water a day than you are definitely dehydrated. are you having trouble with getting water down ? a sure sign on dehydration is dark urine, and muscle spasm/ tightness

I was like you, also after surgery. When I moved on to solids, I was more constipated than I could even imagine (was always the "other way" if you know what I mean!). After a few very painfull days this past month (I still can't eat much veggies or Fiber and fiber gummies just didn't give me enough), I've found taking a Colace gell tab at night and eating at least one prune (per my Nut. - make sure you can eat them before trying!) per day. It seems to be helping everything move on down very gently and naturally. Hope this helps!

I really thought I was going to pass out when I tried to go. Please first try a softener. Colace worked wonders for me. Milk of Magnesia wasn't bad either. Your bum will thank you!

Ok, drop the Protein completely. You need Water. Focus only on hydration till you can get 60oz in a day. Then add protein as you can fit it in.

And honestly, you've only had 100g of protein in 10 days. I wouldn't expect a BM.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
