fp9107 121 Posted January 2, 2013 My doctor is requiring me to lose 14 pounds before I can have surgery. I have lost seven pounds so and my nurse says if I do not loose the other seven by the end of February I will have to do a liquid diet. Have any of you had to do a liquid diet before your surgery? If you did, what was it and do you have any suggestions on what to do to to loose the weight before surgery.
cbd 78 Posted January 2, 2013 I am having surgery on the 10th. I have to be on a clear liquid diet for five days prior...my surgeon said that will help shrink the liver away from an area they have to work around.
kitkat 76 Posted January 2, 2013 I was on a Full liquid diet for 14 days before my surgery. It was Protein Shakes, Jello, broth, cream Soups and other liquids. About 1000 cal. a day. Not fun but it did the trick. Good Luck.
ChristineR 128 Posted January 2, 2013 My understanding is that a liquid diet is required pre surgery to shrink the liver some. I will be on one for 2 weeks
Rinrocks1 6 Posted January 2, 2013 I'm on my preop full liquid diet now. I have to do it for 7 days prior to surgery! It's tough but I know it will be worth it. The train is die to the liver. If your liver is large and fatty there is a chance it will be lacerated during surgery and u don't want that to happen!!!
ATX Girl 24 Posted January 2, 2013 Yes, I think the liquid pre-op diet is fairly common. I have to do liquids for 9 days pre-op and will be starting this coming weekend. I have also heard others with docs who say it is optional, but if the liver is too fatty, they will have 6 incisions instead of 5 so they can work around it better. My doc is requiring I lose 5% of my body weight before surgery - I truly believe it's not as much about losing the weight as it is shrinking my liver. Good luck! I honestly believe the pre-op diet is going to be the hardest part!
