Who's going to have this done soon?

Recommended Posts

Hi. I am wondering if anyone is planning on having the procedure done say the beginning of February. I will be having the vertical sleeve done and I will have to be travelling alone. I am hoping that I can maybe travel with someone who will be going to have it done too. I am leaning toward having Dr. Joya do the procedure.

My advice, having just been sleeved on the 27th, is - don't do this alone. Although I have had no complications, I could not have driven myself home the day after surgery. If you are planning on a longer hospital stay (say 3 to 5 days), then it's a different situation.

I had a 2 hour drive home from the hospital and describing the ride home by saying, "OUCH!" doesn't even begin to cover the pain.

You will probably have to get prescriptions filled and need some basic things like sugar free popsicles and you aren't going to be in any shape to drive.

This is major surgery and you have to plan for things to go wrong.

Where are you travelling too? I went to Mexico by myself and it is very fine. There are lots of patients there alone. You are not that incapacitated that you can't get your Water, liquids, popsicles. Best wishes to you.

Hi yes I plan on going to Mexico to have the procedure done. I live in Canada and the waiting list here is crazy !!

I don't want to have to go alone but my husband has to stay home with the kids. I've heard all positive things about being able to move around ok after surgery. Also that the staff are very attentive. I am hoping to find someone going around the same time as me so we can help eachother out.

I am a senior citizen with a BMI of 35 plus a couple of health conditions that would benefit from some kind of weight loss surgery, excluding a bypass. I'm in Florida. Anyone considering a doctor in FL for either a lap band or sleeve?

I am Canadian, looking for another Canadian to travel with...I hope.

I am going to guess you are in Brampton Ontario? I am from Canada also I think it will be hard to find someone from here to "go" with. You will have help while there from your coordinators. Remember other patients are in the same boat as you are. Believe me you really won't need much help.

Thanks for the response. I am just scared to go by myself and am hoping that I can meet up with someone having the procedure done too. They don't have to be Canadian but it would be nice :) It's a long flight and it would be reassuring to have someone to talk to who understands and has the same fears as me.

Have you had surgery already?

Yes I had the surgery on September 10th with Dr Garcia, fabulous surgeon. I will be flying out to Tijuana via Detroit on January 9th, is this too early for you? You really will be meeting others at the hotel and at the hospital having the surgery no worries. If you would like to private message me I can give you my phone number and I can answer any questions you may have.

Happy New Year!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
