Did anyone else fail the 2 week pre-op diet...

Recommended Posts

I was supposed to be on the liquid pre-op diet for two weeks (3 Protein Shakes a day and sugar free jello). Needless to say I cracked a few times - nothing horrible like making a trip to coldstone for ice cream - mainly being lightheaded and having a pounding headache so I'd get a 6" chicken breast sub from subway. I'm down about 8 pounds and surgery is day after tomorrow. Has anyone else failed at the diet but still lost weight? What was your outcome? Has anyone been converted to an open procedure? I'm freaking out :( I know I know.. I shoulda stuck to it - Insurance didn't give the ok until 3 days ago though... I've always been denied in the past so I figured I would again... anyway that's neither here nor there. Please dont bash me I feel guilty enough - just wondering if anyone else out there isn't afraid to be honest and share their experience - if you'd rather pm me that's fine too.

I didn't but you will want to contact your surgeon.

Chances are they will tell you that you need to be on Clear liquids until your surgery. The point of the pre op diet is to shrink the liver and prep your body for post op. S/he should know that you have been eating so s/he can determine what you need to do before surgery.

My pre op diet is 3 Protein Shakes and a low carb low fat meal. Sooooo, id assume that u will be ok. We had diet options so i chose the one with real food or i may have jumped out a window.

I've known people that completely ignored their pre-op diet and were fine. Not that I'm SUGGESTING that, but I don't think a slip-up or two would null the whole diet. Mine says I'm supposed to have a Protein Shake for Breakfast and a 200-calorie mid-morning snack but I'm thinking a 200-calorie breakfast sandwich and a Protein shake as a snack sounds like it'd work better. Mine is more a "suggested outline."

They told me I only needed to be on liquids 2 days prior to the conversion but I am a little smaller. The biggest reason is to shrink the liver. If it was only once and you went back to the liquids, I would think you would be ok. good luck

My surgeon required a two week liquid diet....I was unable to stick to it full time. I did full liquids all day and had some type of chicken every night for dinner. I was very honest with him and he was fine with it. I think they expect some cheating, just keep it in moderation. Most important, have nothing to eat/drink after midnight the day of surgery.

Good luck!

I also was upfront with my surgeon because I could do the shakes during the day but found I had to have a light dinner. The nurse was very careful to point out theat I should not be gaining weight at all.

There are so many emotions going on post op and to have that diet and Fluid requirement added another responsibility at first was difficult to take on. I think in the end it was very helpful. Having all of this come down during the holidays is also a factor.

I pray for Gods protection for you as you take this major step towards health.

It seems like every doctor has different requirements and some don't even require a pre-op diet. My doctor required 2 shakes a day and a regular low carb dinner. The point is that every ounce you can lose prior to surgery makes the surgery less risky, and every ounce you lose prior to surgery is one less ounce you have to lose after surgery. Don't beat yourself up...if you could easily stick to a "diet" you wouldn't be having WLS. Good luck!

Im down like 8lbs and surgery is tomorrow at 0730. Surely some of the 8lbs came from my liver?

My NUT basically said to eat low carb ( like Atkins) for about 2 weeks and then all liquids the day before surgery. It was kind of nice to eat this way not only in preparation for the surgery ( shrink the liver), but also as a bridge to eating habits post op.

My diet consisted of 4-5 Meal Replacement shakes plus sf Jello, popsicles and Clear Liquids and broths for 14 days. My nut said if I felt I had to cheat to eat good Protein. I did cheat a couple of times but it was a bite here and there with a chicken breast of beef roast.

I would definitely call your surgeon or Bariatric place. The whole reasoning is for the shrinking of the liver. I have seen posts where livers where too big and in the way and Dr closed them up and didn't do the surgery.

I took my preop very serious as to not cause complications while under.

They will probably tell you everything is ok but to be safe I think I would stick to clear liquids, jello and broths until surgery.

Good. Luck and keep us posted.

But as we all have learned each Dr is so different. But I would definitely call just to be safe.

Def let your Dr know, im sure it won't hinder anything but you want the person who's going to be doing the surgery know what they're up against. Every Dr is way different, there's 3 in the office i go to and they each have different rules

It's really about preparing you and giving the discipline before you start this journey. You will have a much harder time coping with the surgery if you cheat now. I know a good amount of people who cheated and did fine with the surgery. It is all mental, your going to have that headache and lightheaded feeling after surgery only you have no choice but to fight through it, I know your surgery is tomorrow but today just reflect on your relationship with food and try to prepare mentally. I am only 3 weeks out and I will tell you the surgery does not get rid of that mental hunger, so remain positive and focus on other things and you will do great.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
