Questions for those who have had a leak....

Recommended Posts

How many weeks post op did you get the leak, and did it happen because you were not following your diet properly?

I know you have to be brave and honest to respond this because some people here tend to bash those who have made mistakes, but I hope no one does it because there is really no need to put salt on an open wound. What I expect from this post is that you guys educate us and maybe help others not to make the same mistake again.

Thank you.

I followed my diet to a T. My nutritionist told me i was being too strict with myself. They found mine at 11 weeks but my labs indicated it at 6 weeks. It was in the top of the sleeve which is a common place. My doctor said it wasn't anything i did.

During those 11 weeks could you kind of tell something was wrong ? Glad it was nothing you did, thanks for your feedback

Hello,

I was about 10 days out when the leak developed. I followed directions and my surgeon doesn't know why I got a leak. I believe there are other reasons for leaking than not following rules.

I was doing so well and looking so good my dr was surprised I had a leak when I came into her office, she also said it was hard to make me stay because I appeared so healthy-blood work and ct showed otherwise.

My leak symptoms didn't present like most. Low dull positional back ache for 4 days. The fifth day a fever. I never had abdominal pain and my heart felt fine.

I am lucky in that my leak formed an abscess hanging off my stomach, it was/is walnut sized. I was in the hospital for 11 days with very strong antibiotics. Now I am home with more antibiotics.

I have two stents in place and they will remain for 6 weeks. I also learned I am one of the extremely rare people who are allergic to the contrast that is used for the swallow study.

I was my dr first leak with a sleeve. The care I received was swift, compassionate and kept me very comfortable. I am so thankful for this.

So, that's my story. The only thing you can learn from this is to seek help even for something small like a dull backache. You just never know. Better safe than sorry.

I hope everything makes sense as I am on pain medicine and not as well thought out as I could normally be

Best,

Sannah

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
