I found the only way I could cough was to hug a pillow hard at the same time. It still is painful but at least it doesn't feel like your insides are going to come undone. It's tough because I believe your diaphragm is right behind the stomach and contracts when you cough. I just tried to keep in mind that I am not hurting anything by coughing so I just tried to get it over as quick as possible. Good Luck- it will soon get a lot easier.

Yes Hug that pillow when you cough and when you sneeze. I try everything, but coughing was the only way to get that mucus out.

Good luck

Thanks, when I cough I honestly felt like I broke my stomach. I Did try hugging the pillow but I don't think it was hard enough. I have mucus and I'm so afraid

See if you can get some halls or Mucinex to thin the mucous. I've had the cough as well -from the trach tube-- and yes it hurts. The pillow helps!

I also kept coughing and needed to expectorate (sorry -gross!). Def. hold a pillow to your stomach when you cough. The car ride home from hospital was brutal but it helped dislodge mucus. When I got home I was in so much pain anyways, I held my pillow and leaned across bathroom sink and coughed as hard as I could to get it up. It hurt like he'll, I was crying, but it worked! Reduced coughing snd the wheeze was gone. Good luck!

You won't break anything. It just pills your muscles.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
