9 lbs. gone in my first week. Good, bad, or average?

Recommended Posts

I gained 40lbs the first five weeks :P so you now feel great don't you LOL

Really though, your progress is YOUR progress. Was that good? Well it wasn't bad, but you just can't compare because everyone's body reacts differently to the surgery, not to mention that the amount of weight you have to lose also factors in (higher BMI tend to lose a lot more than lower BMI...men lose more than women, etc).

Congrats though :) 9 lbs is just the beginning!!!

You really can't compare yourself to anyone else. There are too many factors.

Men lose faster than women

Higher BMI lose faster than lower BMI

People with a larger muscle base are going to lose faster than those with less

Have thyroid issues? To what degree?

Diabetic?

Exercising?

Following the guidelines loosely or strict?

One thing to know, though, which I believe is true for all, is the first week is going to be about your biggest drop as this is when your body is utilizing the glycogen stored in your muscles which is stored there with Water. As your body burns it, it is also releasing Water, which weighs a lot. 1 pound of weight = 3,500 calories. If you burn 3,500 calories more than you take in, then you lose a pound. Eat 3,500 calories more than your burn, you gain a pound.

So, you lost 9 pounds. Do you think you burned 9 x 3,500 = 31,500 more calories than you consumed? Most likely not. Do you believe that those 9 pounds are 9 pounds of fat? Most likely not.

Don't mean to be discouraging, but informative. Just keep following the guidelines your medical team gave you and you will do great.

Oh, and know that you will have stalls, but that doesn't mean you aren't losing fat or inches. Read about stalls.

That is great as typically most lose about 8 pounds a month. You will lose the most in the first six months-so ride the wave of success and enjoy the reward of almost ten pounds gone!!!

This makes me feel so much better. I was sleeved on 12/5/12. When I went for my 1 week check up I lost 10 pounds. I have a friend who had her sleeve 3 weeks before me who lost 24 pounds the first week and another friend who had hers last week who lost 20 pounds. I was feeling discouraged.

I am now on the normal diet and feel I can eat pretty much anything. My friend who is 3 weeks ahead of me is still struggling to get foods down. She says it feels like they are stuck in her throat. Now I feel like a worrywart because I worry I am eating too much.

I wish there was a guideline that said ... eat this and this and you will loose 2 pounds a week. :/

I know it will get better as I get used to it. The not knowing or worrying if I am doing something wrong is what bothers me.

When the weight loss was at its peak I could lose a pound a day. I didn't care if it was Water or fat or last night's dinner. If I lost a pound and it stayed gone then it was all good!

9 pounds in a week is great. You will stall though, but it's just your body recalibrating. Don't let it get you down..

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
