7 Days Post - Op question about liquids

Recommended Posts

Hi Everybody! Happy New Year!

I'm 7 days post op and have done really well. Zero complications and pain other than nausea right after surgery, gas pain that went away quickly and overall soreness ( it felt like the type of soreness that you get when you're out of shape and exercised hard). I was able to sip Water and suck on ice chips, Popsicles and Crystal Light while in the hospital with no problem at all.

I've been on Clear liquids and full liquids since.... my concern is that I am able to take relatively large sips one after the other without any discomfort.... I guess after reading VST and my docs instructions, I was thinking I would only be able to take tiny sips. I'm kind of worried that maybe my restriction is not what it should be. Maybe once I get to actual food the restriction kicks in?

I was just curious if any of you guys were able to drink much more comfortably than anticipated? If so, how was it once you graduated from liquids to solids?

Surgery Date: 12/21/12

Starting weight (day before surgery) : 271

I can too. I read that it's normal because the swelling has gone down. I still have a problem with swallowing too much air. It makes the most embarrassing noises in my stomach and chest area lol

From what sleeved friends and people on here have said the restriction is much more noticeable when we start eating more solid foods. I was sleeved 12/12/12 and am having a very easy time with liquids as well. I'm still on liquids, and will be until Jan 3.

Yesterday I made a pot of Beans and some leftover ham from Christmas for my hubby. They smelled delicious so I tossed about a 1/4 cup of Beans and broth in the blender. I had that while my hubby pigged out. My "soup" was pretty thick with all of the beans and I went very slowly, savoring every bite and making sure all was ok. About halfway thru I did start to feel a little full so I stopped. It was sort of a relief, I have not felt "full" since the surgery.

liquids do not stay in the stomach very long they go leak through the pyloric sphincter into the intestines that is why you don't get a full feeling from liquids after the swelling has gone down. When you start eating anything thicker that can not go through the pyloric is when you will start getting the full feeling.

Hey! Guess what? I have a Honey Baked Ham bone from Christmas that I intend to make a pot of white beans with and do the same thing as you! I cannot wait!!! The only time I've felt really full is when I have my Protein shake with low carb milk and cottage cheese (in blender). It is awesome and so delicious!

I cannot wait for FOOD!

Hi Richard! Thanks for the explanation - you made me feel better!

I did mine in the crock pot. I put the ham and picked over Beans in the crockpot and covered the beans with 1/2 chicken broth and 1/2 Water. Then I added some sauteed carrots, onion, and celery. Cooked on high 8 hrs.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
