I have my surgery here in Georgetown, Ky on the 31st. I was just wondering how pain is going to be and what are some ways others coped with their operation pain?

Thanks,

Kaysea A.

One word: percoset. Do not be shy about taking the pain pills the doctor prescribes. I was on morphine while in the hospital (ugh) and percoset at home. You need to be as pain free as possible to help you heal. A body stressed by pain has a harder time. I was off the pain pills by day 6.

In all honesty, my pain level was never above a 5 (1-10 scale) the whole time. Good luck to you!!!!

I pretty much stayed on my pain meds on schedule the first few days, which meant a lot of sleeping (thanks, hydrocodone!). By the end of the first week there was a noticeable difference in the pain levels and I was able to move to it "as needed".

From what I've seen on the boards, the amount of pain differs wildly from person to person, with some people seeming to get up and go crazy really fast and others of us just taking longer to mend.

My pain level wasn't too bad when I woke up after surgery but I had to stay an extra night in the hospital because I was SO nauseated and was unable to keep anything down . The doctor said it was a reaction to the anastegia (sp?) they gave me during surgery.

Since I've been home I haven't had anymore problems with vomiting so I guess my doc was right.

I took the pain medication for a few days and felt great Christmas Eve and Christmas. However yesterday and today I've felt a bit week, tired, and achy. I think it's because I haven't eaten any 'real' food for 11days.

Overall though it wasn't too bad!

I wasn't in any pain at all while in hospital. They kept me pretty drugged up the first day. By the end of the 2nd day I was pretty much off of any pain medication. I was sent home with pain meds to take if needed and I've taken maybe 4 since I got home. If I am doing too much moving around, I get a little sore.

I'd say the feeling by day 3 was more like I was punched in my belly from the inside. Not really noticeable pain. Just sore.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
