My story 1 month out

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery after a 18 month wait and 4 months of classes. The surgery went well, my doc said my liver shrinking diet worked well and surgery took 45 mins. I woke up in my room and it did hurt! Nobody talks about the pain but I'm gonna say it did hurt. It was well controlled with medication though! I was discharged on day 3 cause I was still having trouble getting any fluids down. I also had diahrrea in the hospital. They said it was normal so I was t worried. When I went home sat I had diahrrea about 10 times and the same thing Sunday. By mon morn I was weak and very dehydrated. I was back at the hospital 2x that week for an iv but I felt better each time so it got me over the hump. By week 2 I was starting to feel normal. Apparently I had a stomach virus - NOT fair! Slowly I started eating full liq then onto mashed potatoes and continued to progress quickly. At 3 wks I could eat reg food as long as chewed really well. Now 1 mo out I'm eating anything in sm portions and feel great. Just wanted to share this because the person I was the first 2 weeks is WAY different than now. I was getting upset thinking it would be crampy and uncomfortable to eat every time and how was I going to ever eat reg food but it does get better. Now at 1 mo I'm down 17 lbs from surgery ( plus another 20 pre op) and sometimes the scale doesn't move for 2 wks and its slow but it's coming and the clothes are bigger. So good luck everyone and remember this is a journey and none of us put this weight on overnight and it doesn't come off that way!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
